At the start of July, a new report emerged claiming Xbox was working on a system that would allow users to continue using their physical games in an increasingly digital future. Now, we’ve learned that it could be arriving this month.
First, here’s how the system is claimed to work: you insert a disc into the console and a digital licence is then given to your account, meaning you can keep playing the game without needing to have the disc inserted. However, if the disc is sold, traded or simply handed to someone else and inserted into another console, your licence will be revoked and the new owner will get one instead. There are some obvious potential loopholes that I assume Xbox has figured out, but that’s the gist.
The August date originally came from console modder and developer RetroGamer_74, who shared what they claim is an internal Xbox email. According to the alleged message, the Disc-to-Digital program will officially launch in August 2026, although it doesn’t explain exactly how Xbox will detect a disc changing hands and remove the previous owner’s licence.
On its own, an unverified internal email posted on X would be worth taking with a substantial pile of salt. However, Windows Central’s Jez Corden has now reported that the system, codenamed Positron, is expected to be revealed sometime in August, according to multiple trusted sources. That’s not quite confirmation that it will actually launch this month, but it does make the alleged roadmap considerably more believable.
Corden says Positron won’t support every game, with licensing agreements and publisher approval likely to determine what can be converted. Compatible Xbox Play Anywhere games would also grant access to the PC version, potentially making this about far more than simply preparing for the next Xbox.
There are still plenty of questions. The biggest is how often a console will need to connect to the internet to prove the player still owns the disc. If I convert a game, take my console offline and then hand the disc to someone else, what happens to my existing licence? Presumably Microsoft has some sort of mandatory online check-in planned, because otherwise one disc could slowly create an army of permanent digital copies. That solution brings its own problem, though: access to a game you physically bought would become dependent on Microsoft’s servers.
That concern is especially difficult to ignore after July’s Xbox outage managed to prevent some physical games from launching due to a licensing-service failure. Microsoft says disc-based games should still work offline and that a permanent fix is coming, but it wasn’t exactly the ideal demonstration of why we should trust another layer of digital authentication.
The timing, however, couldn’t be better for Xbox. Sony is pushing ahead with its controversial plan to stop producing physical PlayStation games in 2028, despite the backlash. Microsoft unveiling a system that preserves access to existing physical collections would hand Xbox an easy win, even if Positron is ultimately more of a bridge into the same all-digital future than a genuine defence of discs.
And that brings us to Xbox Helix. Microsoft reportedly hasn’t made a final decision, but sources have repeatedly suggested the next Xbox is unlikely to include a disc drive. If that’s true, Positron seems designed to let players digitise their collections now on a Series X, carry those licences onto Helix and then keep the original discs sitting safely on a shelf.
It’s important to note, though, you’d need to convert your discs before getting Helix and getting rid of your old console, because if Helix really doesn’t have a disc-drive, it would be a bit tricky to insert a disc to get it digitized. Bit of a bugger, that.
Of course, that also means you couldn’t sell those games without losing access to them. You would still technically own the disc, but its main job would be sitting there and looking reassuringly physical while the digital licence does all the actual work. It’s better than being left with a heap of glorified coasters, though.
