Owners of classic games come and gone have a new reason to rejoice after it was confirmed there’s a way to resurrect long-lost titles on modern platforms using XBOX’s new disc-to-digital program.
X user Storm360 posted about their experience on the social media site, saying that they were testing out the new program, which allows game owners to convert physical games into digital licenses, updating their ownership rights to more suit the modern era. The user wrote that he wanted to “test as much as edge case stuff” as possible, meaning obscure titles or games unlikely to be supported by the program.
After trying multiple titles, Storm360 confirmed that they found success converting games that have been delisted from the XBOX Marketplace, as well as physical-only titles that have never seen digital release previously. That news will come as a welcome boon to XBOX owners and opens up a near limitless library of titles they can add to their digital collections—contingent on the fact that they own the physical game, that is.
A screenshot shared by Storm360 showed a range of classic titles listed under their “Owned Games” tab on XBOX, including LEGO Dimensions, L.A. Noire and Grand Theft Auto 3. However, not every game successfully granted digital licenses, with Storm360 reporting that they faced failure with various SEGA titles, as well as Dead Rising 3, released in 2013 on Xbox One.
The flexibility that XBOX is showing by granting users more agency in whether they opt for physical discs or utilize their digital license scheme has gone over well with fans. Supported games will also increase over time as developers come on board—the company is offering an opt-in service that removes any technical hurdles when bringing old titles to new hardware via Microsoft’s in-house emulation engine.

Of course, we’re talking about Sony—the gaming giant who seemingly toppled its own stellar reputation with its announcement earlier this year that it would stop production of physical discs from January 2028. The news all but guarantees the PS6 will come without a disc drive and has left fans furious.
More than 100,000 have signed a petition pleading for the company to change course, but Sony has only doubled down on its announcement and has added warning labels to PS5 console boxes heralding the coming all-digital apocalypse.

PlayStation’s history of backwards compatibility is already patchy, with the company pouring most of its resources and funding into new IPs and long-desired sequels and roundly ignoring its plethora of smash hits from PS1, PS2 and PS3. In response to fan demand, it allowed a handful of titles to be emulated on its PS4 and PS5 consoles, but has severely lagged behind competitor XBOX.
While developing its consoles, XBOX often puts backwards compatibility at the heart of its design, and currently supports four generations of XBOX software with its Series X/S consoles. Now, with the disc-to-digital expanding over the coming months, console owners can look forward to preserving their own gaming legacies and dive back into nostalgic titles whenever they please.
With XBOX trying its hardest to come back in a big way with a major focus on preservation, it seems to be leaving PlayStation in the dust—and fans are certainly noticing. Your move, Sony.
