If you were hoping Onimusha: Way of the Sword would revive the dormant series, you may get your wish. Capcom today announced the latest installment in the action game series has already sold over one million copies across all platforms.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold that many in its first day of release, according to Capcom. The game was released on 4th September on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2. The Onimusha series as a whole has now surpassed 10 million copies sold over its lifetime.

Although Capcom hasn’t shared specific sales figures for each platform, it’s safe to say PC has been one of Way of the Sword’s biggest. Over on Steam, the game peaked at 85,081 concurrent players (via SteamDB), and ranks among the best-selling games on the platform at the moment.

Way of the Sword is the first new release in the Onimusha series in over 20 years. The game continues Capcom’s trend of successfully modernising its classic games and franchises.

By comparison, the long-in-development Pragmata sold one million copies in its first two days on sale – a good result for a new IP. Capcom’s biggest hit this year so far, of course, has been Resident Evil Requiem, which sold five million units in under a week.

In July, Capcom brought forward Way of the Sword’s release date, just days after the publisher-developer said it was committed to the game’s previously announced 25th September release date.

In the Eurogamer review of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Dom Peppiatt was particularly impressed with what the developer successfully crafted: a deep game of swordplay and a lack of common Soulslike design tropes.
