Aniimo has definitely been one of the biggest surprises of the year for me, but a pleasant one for once. I didn’t expect it to be so charming, detailed, and captivating, but it’s exactly what was needed when we needed it most.

Aniimo is an improvement on Palworld and even Pokémon in a lot of ways. Even as someone who doesn’t really care for MMOs, I have been having a blast playing it, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes cozy RPGs, good vibes, and who enjoys compulsively collecting things in games, even if you don’t play MMOs as a rule. Here are a couple of reasons you should consider Aniimo no matter what games you prefer.

It’s Very Easy to Play as a Single-Player Game
Forget the Idea That You Need to Play With Strangers
Sometimes you don’t want to deal with playing nice with strangers and forge your own path. Aniimo can be played like a single-player game even more so than MMORPGs like Star Wars: The Old Republic or Elder Scrolls Online. Most of the areas are single-player, and you can turn off the messages players can leave in certain areas, leaving Idyll completely to yourself.
I have a strong preference for single-player games, and Aniimo fits the bill for me. I haven’t felt held back at all by not participating in events or doing anything that requires interacting with others. I’m sure that at the higher levels I’ll have to do so eventually, especially to get anything limited, but so far I feel as if I’m playing a single-player game with some MMO elements like respawning on death.

You Can Ignore the Multiplayer
It’s Not Necessary to Thrive
As an MMORPG, Aniimo obviously has multiplayer elements like events and dungeons. However, they’re all very easy to ignore and aren’t at all necessary to do well.
Without touching the multiplayer aspect or the events, I’ve gotten multiple sparkly aniimos, more than ten Perfect rank aniimos, and a host of rare items. I feel like a collector, and have already sunk so many hours into this game collecting aniimo, tending my RV home, and investing in the story. Perhaps after I’ve explored everything it has to offer I’ll have to invest in the events, but I’m dozens of hours in and still haven’t run out of things to do.

MMOs can have a give or take art style simply because of their nature, but Aniimo didn’t scrimp here. Idyll lives up to its name as a beautiful locale, but the art style also raises the standards of what we can expect from an MMO.

The art style is best described as anime in a 3D form. While this isn’t the best interpretation for the human characters, there’s not much to get angry about when it comes to their designs. The real winners are the aniimos, who are adorable and show the very best of what the art style and graphics can do.

You Can Build a Home
Your Own Space Away From Everything
One of my favorite parts of Aniimo is my RV. When you reach Student Level II (notably different from character level 2), you’ll get an RV with a folded space, much like what it’s apparently like in the aniimo pods. The RV includes a portal to this space, which leads you to the most beautiful homestead with empty land to farm.
This land is completely yours to farm, mine, and decorate. You can assign aniimo from your collection as a substitute for automation. Seeing my aniimo water and harvesting crops, mining, and powering different machines is equal parts adorable and oddly efficient. It makes the entire process more wholesome. You can also upgrade your RV to unlock more plots of land and to produce better goods.

It’s Very Cute and Relaxing
This is Platonic Ideal For Cozy RPGs
Everything in Aniimo is designed for peak cute vibes. The machines on your homestead are designed to look like theme park rides or playground equipment, so your aniimo look like they’re playing when using them. The music does a lot to establish a warm and cozy atmosphere, and combat is largely optional.
All of this is done on your own, making Aniimo perfect for those who prefer single-player games. You don’t even see other players outside of hubs or bonfire spots, making you feel as if you’re truly on your own adventure. It’s not that far removed from other single-player open-world cozy RPGs like My Time at Sandrock, and is very playable as a single-player cozy RPG.

There’ll Be More to Collect in the Future
Free Updates are Always Welcome
There are already dozens of aniimo to collect, and Aniimo has only just launched. There’s enough to do here for dozens of hours, with a ton more to do than capturing and training aniimo. I personally love homesteading, and there’s a lot to be said about having a home base to customize that’s completely your own.

But if your priority is to capture and collect creatures like in Pokémon, Aniimo will very likely be adding more in the future. As an MMO, it’s supposed to be sustainable and relevant in the long-term with regular updates and storyline and content additions. It’s basically like a Pokémon game that lasts forever.

It’s Free with Minimal Payments
Barring Possible Future Expansions
Aniimo is free-to-play, but when I see a game like that, I approach it with a hefty dose of skepticism as it’s often code for a title that’s more often than not pay-to-win, a scam gacha system, or has subscription fees that add up.
Aniimo does include paid elements, but so far they’re just for cosmetics. There are a ton of cosmetics available in-game that you can get as quest rewards or with in-game currency, so the paid items are just nice to have, but not anything that’s necessary to enjoy the game. As an added bonus, Aniimo is also cross-platform, so you can access your saves on PC, console, and your smartphone, making it very accessible.

It Has Fun Mechanics
Everything is Intentional
Different aniimo have different abilities, and that’s helpful for you as you can twine with them. Twining basically lets you merge with an aniimo you own, letting you directly control them. This is incredibly helpful for combat, which happens in real time, but it’s also a lifesaver when exploring.
You can assign aniimo you own to different tasks for exploration, such as flying, climbing, and swimming, and doing those things will have you automatically twine with the assigned aniimo. There’s nothing quite as exhilarating as leaping off a cliff and transforming into a flying squirrel creature and gliding through the air, and it adds a certain charm to the most mundane of tasks. There are other perks to twining, like having Emberpups follow you around if you twine with a Flameruff, a small detail that’s so charming that I make sure to always have a Flameruff on my team just in case I come across Emberpups.
