TL;DR
- AYN launched Odin 3 Portal last month with some impressive specifications, including a massive 9,000mAh battery.
- The brand also claimed 60W fast charging, but has since changed its stance.
- The Odin 3 Portal instead comes with 45W charging, which is less than what the previous flagship Odin 3 supports.
Last month, AYN launched a new flagship gaming handheld — the Odin 3 Portal, packed with premium components and high-quality physical controls. These include a non-cellular Snapdragon 8 Elite variant, a 7-inch OLED display, a massive 9,000mAh battery, and a fan to keep the internals cool.
At launch, AYN also promised 60W fast charging, but now appears to be backtracking, calling it a mistake. In an update recently shared on its official Discord server, AYN confirmed that the Odin 3 Portal’s charging speed would be capped at 45W, instead of the 60W previously advertised.
It claims an “internal documentation discrepancy” led to the erroneous reporting at the time of the launch, and further apologized for the confusion. The product page has been updated accordingly, it added.
It’s difficult to say whether it was truly an error, or AYN changing plans to favor more efficient manufacturing. Here’s what it adds:
The finalized design specification and actual product configuration support a maximum charging rate of 45W.
The Odin 3 Portal will be manufactured and delivered according to the finalized 45W specification.
For anyone hoping to buy the new Portal, this could seem a bit disappointing, as the previous Odin 3 (non-Portal) also supports 60W fast charging.
The Odin 3 Portal comes in four configurations, with 12GB or 16GB RAM and storage ranging from 128GB to 1TB. The base model starts at $419 ($399 for early birds), while the high-end Max goes up to $699 ($669 right now).
At launch, AYN had also said the Odin 3 Portal would start shipping “early November,” though the exact date remains unclear. If you’re okay with the slower charging speeds, you can already book yours at the official store.
