Earlier this week, a collection of popular ASMR YouTubers discovered their accounts were simultaneously terminated. With no prior warning or the usual strikes, YouTubers such as Slight Sounds, RoseASMR and Its_Bunnii were removed. YouTube informed the accounts that they broke “sexual content” policies, but it’s already sparked up skepticism. While the line between intimacy and eros has always been contentious in ASMR circles, the sudden condemnation of decade-plus projects raises obvious double standards on what’s ultimately allowed on the platform.
“This has been my livelihood and my career for eight or nine years now, so getting it removed and taken away from me without warning obviously affects me financially,” Slight Sounds tells 404 Media’s Samantha Cole. “Being told not only that you’re not going to make money on this, but also your archive, your life’s work, videos that mean so much to me and so many other people are just gone, and I can’t access that. That’s something that’s really hard to grapple with.”
Autonomous sensory meridian response, better known as ASMR, is a phenomenon where individuals experience a physical, blissful feeling triggered by certain auditory stimuli, such as tapping, scratching or kind voices. Though the science is still out on what causes it, many compare it to better documented neurological phenomena such as synesthesia. The brain is zany, pick up an Oliver Sacks book. While many were familiar with the sensation, it was an episode of This American Life that spread the term around, which sparked a massive YouTube scene for those looking for dependable soundscapes.

YouTube channels dedicated to ASMR may vlog in a softer tone or run through a carousel of prop-made audio triggers. The more elaborate, and many of the more popular ones, will construct role playing sessions, which run the gamut from space vacations to power drill demonstrations. Personally speaking, I rely on old Art Bell recordings and that awesome, old Canadian guy who discusses woodblock carving history. From experience, washing yourself in a soundscape to tucker out can be an inherently intimate sensation. And while that’s not the same as explicitly erotic, it’s never prevented line blurring, scrutiny or parasocial attention to these accounts, especially towards women.
It’s common for many ASMR accounts to have suggestive videos and roleplays. Likewise, it’s also common for these accounts to have subscription pages elsewhere for more charged material. Directly linking or promoting sexual material is forbidden, though usually accounts make sure to bury those links deep enough to avoid breaking terms of service. Like all social media sites, these women are regularly targeted by Madonna-complexes. There are accounts who tiptoe the line, which video platforms usually reward, but many of the banned accounts were relatively chaste in their uploads, paling to your average 2002 music video. It’s raised suspicions on why they were targeted.

“My most viewed/popular video before it was removed was the “Eyes Closed ASMR” at around 2 million views,” posted Its_Bunnii. “”Gentle Haircut and Styling” and “very breathy and slow ear to ear whispers | story book reading”. Is there something about these that you find sexually gratifying?”
The mass terminations have left these performers distressed, confused and angry, especially as YouTube says they have no intention of reversing the decision. It’s the latest chapter in what seems like a wider campaign of scrubbing all queer and erotic material online. As payment processors clutch their pearls, and platforms like Patreon, Steam and Itch.io scrub their hands raw, media from major commercial entertainment remains unaffected, and the scope of online speech worsens in real time.
