Android Canary 2608 is Google’s last release for Pixel 6 phones

    TL;DR

    • Google’s latest Android Canary build is now out, supporting Pixel 6 and newer hardware.
    • This will be the final Android Canary release for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
    • Today’s 2608 build introduces some new ways to customize Quick Settings.

Google’s got tons of options right now for testers looking to get a taste of Android’s latest changes before anybody else, but you absolutely need to be first in line, there’s no better option than the Android Canary program. It’s been exactly one month since the 2607 July build arrived, and Google is now back with August’s Android Canary 2608.

Over on Reddit’s Canary sub, Google shares the news of Android Canary 2608’s availability. Sadly, it’s not all good, and we’ve got some bad news for testers hoping to eke a little more life out of some of Google’s oldest hardware: Just like Android 17 QPR2, Canary is also dropping support for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The good news is that you can still install today’s release — but that’s it; you’re cut off, going forward.

Google’s Mishaal Rahman has taken to X to highlight some of the bigger changes present in 2608, like a powerful new Quick Settings editor:

🐤 Android Canary 2608 is now available with an exciting new customization feature to test: a Quick Settings layout editor!

Here’s a quick look at what it can do 🧵

This is just a taste of all the options available, so hopefully everyone will be able to land on a layout that really works for them:

Rahman also shines a spotlight on the new Canary’s support for easy resizing via app handles, which look just perfect for big-screen phones like a certain Pixel 11 on the way:

➗ The 2608 Android Canary update also has a great new multitasking feature to test on foldables: an app handle!

You can drag this handle to transition a full screen app into split screen mode or vice versa. You can also drag the handle on an app bubble to open it in full screen… pic.twitter.com/smmGrmN7t5

If you’re looking to get started with Android Canary, first make sure to back up all your Pixel’s important data (which WILL get wiped) and flash the appropriate build for your phone with Google’s Android Flash Tool on the web.
