Over the weekend, a massive leak of Steam files from 2003 to 2013 hit the web. Since then, people have been digging through the 13-terabyte leak to find interesting pre-release builds and betas. A lot of people were probably hoping to stumble across an incomplete Half-Life Episode 3 build. That hasn’t happened yet, but someone did find an unreleased and unfinished online horror game based on the Scream franchise.

On August 31, Twitter user Roly Poly Reaper posted about how they had been digging through the massive leak and discovered a previously unannounced Scream game developed by Fatshark, the same studio behind co-op games Warhammer 40k: Darktide and Warhammer: Vermintide 2.

Roly Poly Reaper claims they found a few different, unfinished builds of this Scream game in the Steam leak and were able to get them up and running on their PC. They even got a later build of Scream running with multiplayer support, letting other people hop in and play the incomplete multiplayer horror game. In the footage, you can see a few players taking on the role of survivors trying to escape Ghostface and one player who is in control of the masked killer.

It is interesting to note that this Scream game was developed by Fatshark, according to datamined info, around 2011. That puts it ahead of the influx of asymmetrical horror titles we saw pop up a few years later, with games like Dead By Daylight and Friday the 13th becoming popular. A new asymmetrical horror game, Halloween: The Game, is launching this month, and based on pre-release trailers and gameplay, Michael seems to have a similar “ghost mode” to Ghostface in the leaked prototype. Both modes in both games let the killer quickly move around the map unseen and pop up behind victims to kill them.

Currently, we don’t know much about this unfinished Scream game. The person who found it suggests that it was likely just a pitch, as the builds and data are located in folders labeled “Scream_Pitch” and “Screampitch_inside.” More proof of this is that the last version of the game was seemingly worked on in February, a few months before Scream 4’s release in theaters.

I wonder what would have happened if this pitch had been accepted and this online Scream game was finished and released. Would it have become the de facto online asymmetrical horror game, beating Dead by Daylight by a few years? Or would it have flopped and maybe convinced some devs that asymmetrical online horror games weren’t viable?
