Blizzard Appears To Be Teasing StarCraft Ahead Of BlizzCon 2026 – WGB

Something to do with StarCraft seems to be on the horizon. Well, on the web browser, anywan. The official StarCraft website has started glitching. Deliberately, mind you. The main background is flickering, text is dissapeting for a split second, video players are jumping across the screen and back again, Ordinarily, a website having a small nervous breakdown wouldn’t be worth much attention, but this is happening nine days before BlizzCon and after months of rumours that StarCraft will be one of the show’s biggest reveals.

Blizzard hasn’t said what any of it means yet, so we are firmly in speculation territory. However, the timing makes it difficult to view this as anything other than the beginning of a tease for something StarCraft-related.

The strongest candidate is the long-rumoured StarCraft shooter reportedly being developed internally at Blizzard. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier first revealed its existence in 2024, explaining that a small team left behind following the cancellation of Blizzard’s survival game was incubating a StarCraft shooter under former Far Cry boss Dan Hay.

That was followed in January by Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who said he had independently confirmed the project through his own sources and expected StarCraft to headline BlizzCon 2026.

“The headline for BlizzCon 2026 is most likely going to be StarCraft,” Corden wrote, as quoted by Wowhead. “It was previously reported that StarCraft is getting the third-person shooter treatment, and I confirmed these rumours true via my own sources a while back.”

There have been a few more signs of life since then. Blizzard advertised for a lead designer to work on an unannounced AAA open-world shooter using Unreal Engine, along with an engineer specialising in vehicle simulation. Neither listing mentioned StarCraft, and Blizzard could obviously have another shooter in development, but they fit neatly with the existing reporting.

In April, Corden also said he’d heard that former Insomniac and The Initiative design director Drew Murray was working on the project. Murray’s move to Blizzard as an associate design director is public, but his involvement with StarCraft remains unconfirmed.

As if one unannounced StarCraft game wasn’t enough, there may be another one in development at Nexon. Korean reports have claimed that Blizzard selected the publisher ahead of Krafton, Netmarble and NCSoft to develop a project based on the series. A new report from The Chosun Ilbo says negotiations are now close to completion and that Nexon could obtain the right to develop a successor to the existing StarCraft games.

The Elec has separately reported that the companies are discussing a StarCraft IP agreement, although its version only describes a “new project” rather than StarCraft 3. Nexon told the outlet that it has nothing to confirm.

The important distinction is that this appears to be separate from Blizzard’s own shooter. Earlier reporting said Nexon’s project is being handled by the subsidiary behind Sudden Attack and led by StarCraft modder Choi Jun-ho. Its genre hasn’t been established, so the current talk of “StarCraft 3” should not be taken as confirmation of a traditional RTS sequel. It might be one, but right now that part is hopeful interpretation rather than fact.

Blizzard has left space for surprises. Its newly released BlizzCon schedule says the full schedule will only appear after the opening ceremony, while parts of the show floor remain hidden until then. StarCraft II is also receiving free BlizzCon rewards and will be represented by the Blizzard Classic Cup, although that alone isn’t evidence of a new game.

My guess is that the website is teasing Blizzard’s third-person shooter, simply because that is the project most directly connected to BlizzCon by the reporting. The Nexon deal landing in the news one day before the website started corrupting itself is some very convenient timing, though, and suddenly the possibility of two StarCraft projects doesn’t seem quite so far-fetched.

BlizzCon takes place on September 12 and 13. So just keep an out for it. Or it’s going to turn out that the website is actually just glitching like crazy, which would make for a wild coincedence.
