If you’ve had a calendar reminder set for months, tonight is the night. Apple’s “Surprise and shine” event happens today, September 9, 2026, and it’s shaping up to be the most unusual iPhone launch in years. Not because of a single headline feature, but because of who’s standing on stage introducing it.

This is the first major product keynote under CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on September 1, 2026, after Cook spent 15 years running the company. Cook hasn’t left Apple. He’s moved into the role of executive chairman. But tonight belongs to Ternus, and the lineup he’s unveiling is Apple’s biggest hardware swing in years: a redesigned Pro lineup and, after a decade of rumors, its first folding iPhone.

Here’s what’s actually happening today, when to watch it in India, and what the phones will likely cost.

When Is the iPhone 18 Event and What Time Is It in India?

Apple’s keynote streams today, September 9, 2026, starting at 10 am Pacific Time. That works out to:

    • 10:30 pm IST in India
    • 1 pm ET on the US East Coast
    • 6 pm BST in the UK

Like Apple’s last few launches, this one is a prerecorded video rather than a live event, streamed through Apple’s website, the Apple TV app, and Apple’s YouTube channel. You don’t need an invite or a ticket. Pull it up on your phone, your smart TV, or a laptop, and it starts on schedule.

What’s Actually Launching Today, and What’s Not

Here’s something that trips people up: this event isn’t introducing an “iPhone 18” the way past Septembers introduced a plain-numbered flagship alongside its Pro sibling. According to a report from Korean outlet ET News, Apple has split the iPhone 18 generation across two separate launches.

Today covers the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone. Apple is holding the standard iPhone 18 and a budget iPhone 18e, the successor to the iPhone 17e, back for a second event in early 2027.

That’s a real change in strategy, not a rumor mill exaggeration. Apple is reportedly front-loading its most premium, most talked-about hardware into September and pushing the mainstream models to spring, presumably to keep news cycles going for longer between generations. If you were hoping to see a $799 iPhone 18 tonight, you’ll be waiting a few more months.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: The Real Upgrades This Year

The headline change is inside the phone, not on its back. Rumors point to both Pro models running Apple’s A20 Pro chip, the company’s first iPhone processor built on a 2-nanometer process. Early benchmarks suggest roughly 18 percent faster CPU performance and up to 30 percent better power efficiency over the A19 Pro. Apple will confirm the real numbers on stage tonight.

Pair that with Apple’s second-generation C2 modem, and the pitch is a phone that runs cooler, lasts longer, and handles 5G more efficiently than last year’s model. Whether every buyer notices that in daily use is a fair question. Chip generation gains are usually more visible in battery life than in raw speed once you’re just checking messages and scrolling social feeds.

The camera system is where Apple seems to be taking an actual risk. Rumors point to a variable-aperture main camera on at least the Pro Max, letting you manually control depth of field the way a DSLR does, something no iPhone has offered before. A rumored three-layer stacked image sensor from Samsung would also help with low-light shots, historically the one area where Android flagships have kept an edge.

Design-wise, expect a smaller Dynamic Island and a heavier Pro Max, driven by a larger 5,567 mAh battery. Color rumors point to a deep cherry red, a light sky blue, and silver, though leaks disagree on whether black returns to the lineup this year.

None of that is a reason to skip an upgrade if your current iPhone is genuinely struggling. But if you’re running an iPhone 16 Pro or newer, this reads more like a meaningful refinement than a must-have jump, at least until Apple’s keynote fills in real specs and real camera samples.

    Apple’s Foldable iPhone

This is the part of the keynote most people are actually tuning in for. After years of patent filings and vague hints, Apple looks set to unveil its first folding iPhone tonight, widely rumored to ship as the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra.

The design leans book-style, like opening a small tablet: a 5.5-inch cover screen for quick glances, and a 7.8-inch inner display for full use. Leaks describe a liquid metal hinge engineered to minimize the crease that’s plagued Samsung’s folding phones for years, with the whole device measuring around 4.5mm thick when unfolded and 9mm folded shut.

One detail that will surprise longtime iPhone users: no Face ID. The slim hinge design reportedly forced Apple to move authentication to a Touch ID sensor built into the side button instead, similar to the iPad mini and iPad Air. The camera setup is also simpler than the Pro lineup’s, with just an Ultra Wide and Wide lens and no telephoto, at least in this first generation.

That’s the trade-off with any first-generation folding phone. You get a genuinely new form factor, but not every feature from the flagship line makes it in on day one. If a fold-flat crease-free display matters more to you than a zoom lens, this could be the phone Apple skeptics have been waiting for. If you shoot a lot of long-range photos, the regular Pro Max is still the safer bet.

Supply looks tight. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says pre-orders for the foldable may not even open alongside the Pro models, arriving later in the fourth quarter of 2026 instead, a pattern similar to how Apple staggered the original iPhone X in 2017.

iPhone 18 Series Price in India (and How It Compares)

Apple hasn’t confirmed pricing yet, but the numbers converging from multiple leaks are specific enough to take seriously. Tipster Yogesh Brar’s figures for India, which line up with US pricing reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, point to:

    • iPhone 18 Pro: ₹1,44,900 (up from ₹1,34,900 for the iPhone 17 Pro)
    • iPhone 18 Pro Max: ₹1,59,900 (up from ₹1,49,900 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max)
    • iPhone Fold/Ultra: ₹2,49,900, positioned above Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra at ₹1,99,999

That’s a ₹10,000 jump on both Pro models, which lines up neatly with Gurman’s reporting that US pricing will rise by $100 per model, a smaller increase than the $150 to $300 hike many analysts had braced for after the 2-nanometer chip drove up manufacturing costs. Worth remembering: none of this is official until Apple says so on stage tonight. Treat it as a well-sourced estimate, not a receipt.

Pre-Orders and Release Date: When You Can Actually Buy One

If the Pro models follow the pattern reported by MacRumors, pre-orders open Saturday, September 12, at 12:01 am Pacific Time, a day later than Apple’s usual Friday slot. The shift is reportedly deliberate. September 11, 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and Apple appears to be avoiding a product pre-order landing on that date.

From there, Apple’s usual cadence points to a standard week-long gap before phones ship. Friday, September 18, 2026 looks like the most likely release date, though that’s still an estimate until Apple confirms it tonight. The foldable iPhone, as mentioned above, may trail behind by weeks or months given how new the manufacturing process is.

Beyond the iPhone: What Else Apple Will Likely Show

The iPhone isn’t the only hardware on tonight’s agenda. Apple Watch Series 12 is rumored to bring back a ceramic case option alongside an updated processor, while Apple Watch Ultra 4 gets a smaller internal refresh rather than a redesign.

New AirPods are also on tap, with some reports pointing to a next-generation chip for better sound and lower latency, and others describing a higher-end model with a built-in camera for Siri’s visual intelligence features. Rounding things out, look for a refreshed Apple TV 4K, an updated HomePod mini, and possibly Apple’s long-rumored smart home hub.

None of these will headline tonight’s keynote, but they still matter for anyone building out an Apple setup rather than buying a single phone. iOS 27, which the new iPhones will ship with, is expected to reach existing eligible devices as soon as September 14. Before upgrading, it is worth checking whether your current iPhone supports iOS 27, as that could help you decide if a new device is really necessary.

    Final Thoughts

Strip away the leaks and speculation, and tonight comes down to two real stories: Apple finally shipping a folding iPhone after a decade of rumors, and a new CEO using his first keynote to bet big on hardware rather than play it safe. The Pro upgrades are solid but incremental.

The fold is the genuine gamble, limited supply and missing telephoto lens included. Whether either convinces you to spend ₹1,44,900 or more depends less on the spec sheet and more on whether you’ve been waiting for a new shape, not just a new number.
