Nintendo has officially released firmware update 23.0.0 for the Nintendo Switch 2, introducing highly requested display capabilities alongside several functional system improvements. The centerpiece of this release is the activation of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support when the console outputs video to a television via the dock, fulfilling a feature promised since the hardware’s initial market debut.

Already a standard visual solution across contemporary platforms like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, as well as the handheld screen of the Switch 2, VRR technology dynamically matches a connected television display’s refresh rate to the real-time frame output produced by the console’s graphics processor. By synchronizing these rendering cycles, the system effectively eliminates noticeable screen tearing and reduces visual stuttering during heavy graphical sequences, ensuring a significantly smoother gaming experience on large displays.

Beyond display enhancements, the system software package delivers multiple quality-of-life additions. The quick settings menu now features an accessible toggle for handheld boost mode, enabling players to enhance the operational performance of legacy Nintendo Switch games directly during play sessions without needing to navigate the full system settings interface.

Additionally, the Mii editor received an update that lets users select and play nostalgic background music tracks originating from earlier platforms, including the Wii, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U. Concurrently, the update implements a direct system-to-system transfer utility connecting two Switch 2 consoles, streamlining full profile and memory migrations ahead of upcoming hardware releases such as the special edition model themed around the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake.

The firmware update 23.0.0 is currently accessible globally and can be downloaded immediately through the standard system update tab within the device menu.
