Drop Dead: The Cabin – CO-OP Zombie Fun…
Online co-op games are, no matter how you look at it, some of the most ridiculously fun experiences I can have in gaming. It is kind of odd, really, as I generally hate online gaming, but with co-op I normally play with friends rather than randoms. Well, OK… sometimes randoms too.
Get the group together in a voice chat, start the game and just go crazy. We are not trying to be serious whatsoever; we just want to have fun and see if the co-op actually works. And if it does, well… the levels basically complete themselves, right?
Drop Dead: The Cabin is exactly this kind of game: pure, mindless fun.
We mostly played the game on Easy simply because we found that to be the most fun, but there are multiple difficulty settings, and yeah, even Normal can be crazy hard. This is especially true if you haven’t played much before, as Drop Dead: The Cabin is essentially a roguelite at heart. You gradually become stronger the more you play, levelling up weapons and even everyday objects that can be used as weapons.
You have the obvious stuff like guns and baseball bats, but you can also use planks, cutlery, shovels and all sorts of other things you find scattered around the cabin and the various locations outside.
The cool thing is that everything you find automatically levels up simply by using it. So you’re not only levelling up yourself, but also all the stuff around you. It creates this incredibly addictive “just one more go” gameplay loop.
At its core, Drop Dead: The Cabin is a kill-all-the-zombies-and-survive type of game, but there’s more to it than simply blasting everything that moves.
You need to find three power cells randomly spread across the map: one inside the house, one inside a shed and another somewhere within one of the designated locations around the map. The locations and associated challenges are randomly selected for each run, meaning things don’t always play out exactly the same way.
You then have to bring these power cells back to the cabin and place them in the generator. While powering it up, you’ll also need to make sure power is distributed throughout the cabin, and yeah… this involves killing A LOT of zombies while constantly running back and forth.
I’m explaining all of this because I’ve noticed that quite a few people seem to think this is a more strategic type of game involving fortifications and stuff like that. It really isn’t.
This game is actually about escaping the cabin.
Once you’ve used all the power cells and managed to call in an extraction chopper, you’ll have to run like crazy towards the landing zone while trying not to get turned into zombie food along the way.
And bloody hell, it is fun!
My extraction record currently sits at 22 minutes, while my slowest successful run took 1 hour and 12 minutes. It really comes down to communication, teamwork and basically surviving the waves long enough to get those power cells where they need to be.
Technically, Drop Dead: The Cabin runs at a native 90Hz, while there’s also a 120Hz reprojected option. There are quite a few graphical settings to play around with too. I eventually ended up going for a really sharp and clean image, although during my first few days with the game I actually preferred playing with film grain and some of the other effects enabled, simply because I fancied that look more at the time.
The controls are great, the game is ridiculously fun, there’s basically no jank to speak of, the music is awesome, the graphics are good and the use of the PS VR2 features is fantastic. Great trophy list with a Platinum too.
Drop Dead: The Cabin is simply a bloody good time with friends.
And no, I’m not just saying all of this because I’m in the credits…
…although, yeah, this is yet another PS VR2 game where my name somehow managed to pop up in the credits. 😎
Drop Dead: The Cabin works great as a singleplayer game too btw, so do not worry about it being online co-op only.
