Rockstar fans scoffed when they heard that the studio would be hosting its big reveal of Grand Theft Auto 6 on Netflix, wondering why on Earth the streamer would get involved in an industry as alien to it as video game marketing. However, the move has seemingly paid off for both companies, driving huge interest in Rockstar’s upcoming flagship title and filling the coffers of Netflix by majorly lifting its subscriber count.
According to GamesIndustry.biz, Netflix saw more than 100,000 new subscription sign-ups in the US in the period just before the Grand Theft Auto 6 reveal launched on August 27. That huge influx of new customers rivals the sign-ups the streamer earned with its other major 2026 events on the platform, such as the Carney vs. Rousey MMA fight and the final installment of sci-fi giant Stranger Things.
The GTA 6 premiere outperformed every live sports event hosted by Netflix this year so far, barring the Carney vs. Rousey match-up, proving it was a worthwhile bet for Netflix and a savvy decision that certainly reaped its rewards.

Even more impressive is that Netflix was able to attract such a high number of new subscribers when the reveal only had a 6-hour exclusivity window on the platform, before it was officially uploaded on sites like YouTube by Rockstar Games. That version has over 26m views over 2 weeks, whereas Netflix’s official charts show that their version racked up 31.1m views in its first 4 days of launch—a figure which is likely much higher now and proves Netflix was the largest beneficiary of the GTA 6 hype.
The success of the reveal means it’s likely Netflix will keep its eyes open for the next big gaming franchise and try to coordinate some crossover marketing, though it’s unlikely anything will be able to top the rabid passion fans have for Rockstar’s upcoming sixth Grand Theft Auto installment.

A group known as Cyberleek posted multiple illicit videos of GTA 6 gameplay, giving fans their first taste of how the game might actually look. The clips were low quality and reportedly an old build of the game, so the visuals were choppy at times, and it appeared some content was missing. However, the leaks gained huge traction on sites like X and Reddit, only fanning the flames of fan frenzy before the Netflix reveal.

Rockstar Games maintained its silence for weeks, but eventually released a statement the day before Netflix’s premiere, which described the leaks as “heartbreaking” and said it was not how the company intended fans to see the game after years of waiting. Sadly for Cyberleek, their grainy leaks were completely trounced by Rockstar’s flashy Netflix package, which showed 28 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay and unveiled the sun-drenched locales of Leonida and Vice City. Fans were thoroughly impressed and heaped praise onto the game, particularly complimenting the relationship dynamic between main characters Jason and Lucia, as well as the game’s graphical improvements.
Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19, available on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation.
