    Summary

    • OpenAI may pause AI development to contain powerful LLM risks, urging rivals to follow.
    • Top researchers call for voluntary slowdowns and shared safety standards amid misuse fears.
    • But other firms or overseas players may ignore a pause, risking a global AI race and leapfrogging.

In a race, it’s always risky to stop to take a breather and hope that your opponents will do the same, especially if you’re the one to beat. OpenAI seems to believe it has a shot, as it’s currently mulling over putting the brakes on AI advancement for now, with the hope that the rivals snapping at its heels will also opt to take a rest.

OpenAI wants an AI race time-out, and it wants its competitors to respect it

Will anyone actually do that, though?

As reported by Bloomberg, Sam Altman held a company-wide meeting to discuss what’s next with the AI company. It’s getting to the point where AI models are so powerful that they can launch cyberattacks on other websites and services, which has caused some concern about how quickly LLMs are progressing without proper safeguards.

As such, Altman said that OpenAI is ready and willing to put AI advancement on the back burner while it figures out how to contain this new power its AI models have. He hopes that other AI companies will follow suit instead of taking the opportunity to leapfrog over AI, but he’s seemingly aware that some firms will refuse to play ball.

In fact, OpenAI’s top scientist, Jakub Pachocki, hopes AI companies can put down their weapons by “coordinating to slow down future development as needed.” He’s personally hoping “for voluntary slowdowns to become commonplace until shared safety bars are established.”

So, what are the odds that other AI companies will respect the need to slow down? Well, Claude’s Anthropic seems to be experiencing a similar scare, after one of its safety engineers stated that they believed AI has over a 10% chance of ending the human race. However, even if OpenAI can convince all of the US-based LLM firms to link arms together, it does open the door for overseas businesses to overtake them all in a move reminiscent of DeepSeek’s big AI shake-up.
