A nine-year-old YouTuber turned a $20 ad campaign into a $118,000 bill on his dad’s company credit card, and nobody caught it for three weeks. This one’s a wake-up call for anyone who has ever saved a card to a shared Google account, especially if a kid has access to it.
A Small Boost Spiraled Fast
The kid behind the channel Mighty Mike Plays makes Minecraft and Roblox videos. His dad Dave helped him launch a small $20 ad campaign after Mike got frustrated that his videos weren’t getting views, according to Dexerto. Dave walked his son through the basics: pick an audience, set a budget, hit run.
Dave had already saved his company card to the Google account tied to the channel. Mike went back into the ad settings on his own afterward and started launching more campaigns, apparently believing that spending more meant more views. Some of the promoted videos, including a 34-minute Minecraft clip, reached around 200,000 views.
Three weeks later, Dave’s employer’s finance department called him into a meeting and showed him a bill for $118,000 in charges. Viewers had already been noticing something odd. Reddit users reported getting hit with a 14-minute Roblox ad and a 30-minute Minecraft ad from the channel more than a week before Dave’s video went public. Dave still doesn’t know whether he’ll have to repay the money or whether his job is safe.
How Did Nobody Notice Sooner
Part of what let this run so long comes down to how Google Ads actually works. Google’s own advertiser guidelines state that a campaign can spend up to twice its chosen daily budget on any single day, with real limits only kicking in over a full month. Some newer or flagged accounts get extra daily caps, but Google says that protection isn’t guaranteed for every advertiser.
So a saved card with no spending limit attached can keep getting approved, charge after charge, without tripping any alarm.
If you’ve ever saved a card to a family device or a shared Google account, it’s worth checking who else has access to it. Google’s free Family Link app lets parents set spending limits and remove saved payment details before a curious kid finds the ad button. Dave says his family is doing exactly that, and Mighty Mike Plays is on pause until “real guard rails” are in place.
