Since its release in 2011, Minecraft has received countless new biomes, but its number of dimensions has remained consistent over the last fifteen years. But that’s all about to change. As of next year, a fourth dimension will soon join the Overworld, the Nether, and the End. It’s called the Sift, it is riotously pink, and features bunny-like creatures that walk rather than hop.
The Sift was revealed at the end of Saturday’s Minecraft Live. In a brief clip showing the perambulating rabbit strolling through tufts of pink grass beneath a turquoise sky. Mojang didn’t reveal much else about the Sift, but being a whole new dimension, players can naturally expect to encounter new mobs, blocks, biomes and so forth.
While the Sift is coming to both Bedrock and Java versions of Minecraft in 2027, players will be able to explore a variant of the dimension before that. This is because the Sift will also appear in Minecraft Dungeons 2 when it releases next week, and we do know a little more about what form the realm will take in Mojang’s ARPG sequel.

According to Xbox Wire, The Sift is subject to “shifting tides” that can affect player characters, as well as hazardous new block types and new mobs of both friendly and hostile varieties. The article also names two of the biomes featured in the Sift. One is named Singer’s Meadow—a verdant area where all manner of flora grow out of red sculk. The other is called Carapace, which is a desert area dotted with strange blue walls and giant, hollow fossils.

It’s worth reiterating that this all relates to Minecraft Dungeons 2’s version of the Sift, which may differ considerably from the version being added to Minecraft next year. Indeed, Xbox Wire says that Mojang is keeping tight-lipped about both how players will access the Sift and how it will differ from Dungeons 2’s “expression” of it.

It’s a canny marketing ploy for Minecraft Dungeons 2, though I don’t know whether it actually needed it—Minecraft Dungeons seemed to do pretty well for itself. The Sift wasn’t the only new Minecraft location announced during the event. The game’s also getting a new biome called the ice caves.
This is a subterranean biome that will appear sporadically beneath colder surface biomes of the Overworld, and brings with it an interesting new light-based mechanic. The ceilings of ice caves are frocked by icicles that will detach from the ceiling if you place a torch beneath them. Hence, you need to be more careful about where you place your light sources while exploring these chilly underground warrens.
Alongside icicles, ice-caves will also feature light-emitting crystals, a new resource called calcite, and a new zombie variant called the frozen zombie. Mojang hasn’t specified a release date for the ice caves yet, but the biome is apparently coming to testing soon. As for The Sift, I imagine we’ll find out more about Minecraft’s interpretation of the dimension once everyone’s had their fill of exploring it in Minecraft Dungeons 2.
