Many titles that share its philosophy tend to become bloated, yet the stories within this magnificent Mesoamerican fantasy world can be fully completed in just 16 hours, which is time enough to leave a lasting impression.
In terms of gameplay, it strikes a fantastic balance between real-time action and turn-based mechanics, offering excellent, steady progression alongside a compelling story, gorgeous pixel art, and superb sound design.
It’s among the finest indie RPGs I have had the pleasure of playing this decade, and considering the fierce competition, that speaks volumes about the talent behind Arco.

Even though I’m not a fan of the MOBA that spawned them, I’m surprised by how little discussion there is around the titles in the A League of Legends Story series, including the thoroughly delightful The Mageseeker.
Moonlighter‘s creators took on the task of giving Sylas his own campaign, and the result is a wonderful ARPG that hooks you for its 14-and-a-half-hour runtime, whether through its stunning pixel art or its addictive combat.
Beyond its impressive world-building, the game’s mechanics offer outstanding dynamism that helps mitigate the potential monotony inherent to its scope, as it intelligently spaces out major encounters, so the campaign never feels lethargic.
I wouldn’t recommend it at full price, but few discounted purchases are as worthwhile as The Mageseeker, which might pleasantly surprise you if, like me, you go in without expectations and let the action completely win you over.

Tails of Iron
A Kingdom in Dispute
One ARPG I do feel truly comfortable recommending regardless of the price tag in your shopping cart is Tails of Iron, a title that brilliantly adapts the Soulslike variant of 2D ARPGs to a story about rats caught up in political strife.
Its striking art style is merely the tip of the iceberg, as it’s backed by deeply satisfying gameplay where the level of customization available for your battle-hardened rodent makes combat even more adrenaline-fueled and rewarding.
With its creative boss battles, strong sense of exploration, reactive world, and surprisingly fascinating story, I find it difficult to believe you can reach 100% completion in just 11 hours, yet it is undeniably a highly compact title.
However, I would be genuinely surprised if even that level of completion felt like enough, given Tails of Iron belongs to the select group of games that, the moment you finish them, make you want to play through them all over again in a different way.

Pure, Carefree Entertainment
Clocking in at a lovely ten and a half hours for a full playthrough, Cat Quest is a straightforward, unpretentious gem, one whose short runtime and adorable presentation shouldn’t fool you.
This Diablo with cats is among the most praiseworthy ARPGs on the market, as it executes the genre’s fundamentals so meticulously that it’s practically impossible not to be charmed by everything it does.
From its audiovisuals and dungeon design to its side quests, combat mechanics, and feline avatar customization, it’s a highly polished title featuring a solid gameplay loop and a charming world.
Evidently, nobody should get into Cat Quest expecting a daring or intense experience, as it prioritizes a far more traditional, lighthearted, and streamlined adventure focused simply on providing relaxed fun, bordering on the casual.
The title is family-friendly, laid-back, and cute, which are adjectives not typically associated with RPGs, so it rises above being merely good to stand out as unique despite its simplicity, earning just as much respect as its more “mature” counterparts.
