If you were perhaps hoping that the ongoing memory crisis would abate in the coming months, we have some unfortunate news for you.

As reported by The Register, memory shortages are set to get even worse in 2027, with Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO of Micron Technology, stating that demand is already far exceeding supply. He even goes so far as to say that customers will likely pay “much higher prices” than they did this year.

Here’s what he had to say:

“In calendar 2027 as well as 2028, we see demand exceeding supply. In fact, we see greater tightness in the industry in 2027 and in 2028 versus 2026. Overall, supply-demand environment is only getting tighter.

“We do not have line of sight to when supply and demand will return to balance.”

Micron has plans to get new factories up and running in 2028 with the helped of $25 billion in capital expenditure in the first half of its new financial year. But even then, it says that it take some time before things begin to stabilise.

As you’ll no doubt be aware, the surge in demand for memory is largely thanks to the uptick in AI data centres. As a result, the rising cost of such memory has been passed on to the consumer through increased product prices.

Nintendo has already increased the price of the Switch 2 globally, with Sony and Microsoft also introducing price hikes for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S respectively. If things don’t improve soon, it’s not entirely farfetched to expect further price hikes in the coming 12 months. In fact, we’d say it’s almost a certainty at this point.

So, what are your thoughts on all of this? Are you even remotely surprised? Let us know with a comment.
