Hestus Raises $7.4 Million Seed to Bring AI Into Mechanical Engineering – Unite.AI

A mechanical engineer can know exactly what a part needs to do and still spend hours translating that intent into sketches, dimensions, and constraints. Hestus is betting that AI can take on more of that repetitive work—and has raised a $7.4 million seed round to build a purpose-built model for mechanical engineering.

The San Mateo company announced the financing on October 2, with Insight Partners leading the round and participation from Chalfen Ventures, Rock Yard Ventures, Garage Capital, and other investors. Combined with an earlier $1.5 million pre-seed round, the funding brings Hestus’s total raised to $8.9 million.

Hestus plans to expand its engineering team, including machine learning engineers and experienced software developers, advance its model, and accelerate product development. The company says more than 5,000 engineers already use its tools across projects including drones, robots, industrial equipment, and consumer products.

From CAD Autocomplete to Mechanical Intelligence

Hestus calls its broader ambition “Mechanical Intelligence”: a model designed to capture and apply the judgment involved in turning an engineering idea into something that can actually be manufactured. That is a more demanding objective than producing a plausible-looking shape. Mechanical design must connect geometry with the constraints of a physical product and its production process.

“Hardware companies should not have to grow by hiring more engineers to perform work their design tools should handle,” said Sohrab Haghighat, Hestus’s co-founder and CEO, in the announcement. “We are building AI that can translate engineering intent into manufacturable design, freeing engineers to focus on the creative decisions that move products forward.”

The company’s current product offers a concrete starting point. Hestus’s website describes an autocomplete-style assistant that works inside Autodesk Fusion on Mac and Windows. As an engineer sketches, it proposes possible next actions rather than requiring the user to leave the CAD environment. The website also offers a SolidWorks alpha signup.

There is an important distinction between that available product and the larger vision. In its product philosophy, Hestus describes Sketch Helper as focused on 2D design and sketching, with fuller 3D assembly and design-for-manufacturing capabilities planned for future expansion.

What the Technology Does Inside a Sketch

The company’s release notes make the workflow more tangible. Its recommendation system considers the sketch’s current state and the engineer’s interactions, then presents suggested changes as an overlay. Engineers can accept a recommendation, cycle through alternatives, or dismiss it and continue drawing.

Examples include recognizing an axis of symmetry and suggesting mirrored geometry, aligning circular features horizontally or vertically, and connecting dangling endpoints to help close a profile before an extrusion or revolve operation. The tools also address missing dimensions on lines, circles, and arcs.

These are small operations individually, but they recur throughout a design session. Hestus’s approach is to reduce the interface work surrounding an engineer’s decisions while keeping the engineer in control of which suggestions enter the model.

Kyle Faller, a mechanical engineer and co-founder and CEO of Intelline, described that benefit in the funding announcement: “Hestus deploys easily and delivers immediate value by eliminating repetitive mechanical design workflows.” His account is a customer’s experience, rather than an independent productivity benchmark, but it illustrates the workflow the company is targeting.

A Founding Team With Autonomous Systems Experience

Haghighat and co-founder and CTO Kevin Chu met at Cruise Automation, where the announcement says they were among the first 10 employees and helped develop its autonomous-driving technology.

Chu holds a PhD in robotics from UCLA and helped scale Cruise’s autonomous-vehicle engineering organization from 20 to 300 people before later leading software engineering at Mendaera. Haghighat holds a PhD in aerospace engineering from the University of Toronto and subsequently founded SpaceRyde. Their backgrounds combine software, robotics, and the difficulties of building systems that must operate in the physical world.

For the investors, the opportunity extends beyond speeding up individual CAD commands. Rock Yard Ventures managing partner Daniel Dart argued in the announcement that manufacturing capacity depends on an earlier bottleneck: products must first be designed, checked, toleranced, and made manufacturable.

The Next Test Is Beyond Faster Clicking

The round fits a wider investment push toward AI inside engineering and manufacturing workflows. These applications ask AI to work within specialized tools and physical constraints, where an attractive output alone is insufficient.

For Hestus, the immediate opportunity is to make repetitive sketch work less time-consuming. The larger challenge is to extend that assistance into dependable engineering judgment across assemblies and manufacturing decisions. Its seed funding gives the team resources to pursue that transition; the current sketch assistant provides a practical foundation from which to build.
