Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it’s now rolling out a new update for Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on the standard PS5 model, which brings AI-powered visual upscaling for select titles including Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, for Graphics R&D at Sony comments:
Since the launch of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on PS5 Pro, players and developers have asked whether similar image-quality improvements could be brought to the PS5 console. PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches; until now, its computational demands made bringing that experience to PS5 impossible.
Today, we’re excited to announce Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR): a new performance tier of AI upscaling.
Developed through Project Amethyst (Sony’s graphics collaboration with AMD), QSSR is built on a streamlined neural network architecture along with a “hand-tuned” implementation which on paper can maximize performance on base PS5 hardware. While PSSR remains exclusive to the PS5 Pro as the platform’s gold standard, QSSR will be in charge of handling graphics enhancements on the standard console.

Sony adds that QSSR will be offered to more PlayStation developers, which means that we can expect more games to support the feature soon.
