Why a 21-year-old coder finally ported the real P.T. to PC: ‘That something so influential could eventually become unplayable never sat right with me’

One of the most beloved horror games (demos?) of all time is finally free from the shackles of the PS4. Hideo Kojima’s P.T. has been natively ported to PC by programmer Lorean Xavier, who made the project public this week. Not an emulator nor a remake, the native PC client does not contain any copyrighted materials—it requires a dumped copy of P.T. to function—but instead translates the original code into something that’ll run on Windows and Linux.

That distinction not only sidesteps potential corporate scrutiny, but also allows Xavier to add modern graphical features and mod support to the PC version. It’s an impressive effort that, according to the creator, has been in the works since 2024.

“I wanted to make the version of P.T. that my younger self always wished existed,” Xavier, 21, told PC Gamer over email. “My attachment to the game goes all the way back to my childhood. I remember watching videos of it on my phone, wishing I could experience it myself. I didn’t have a PS4, so playing the original was never really an option for me. I never imagined back then that I’d eventually be the one bringing it to PC.”

The window to play P.T. “legitimately” was famously brief. Kojima surprise-dropped P.T. on the PlayStation Network in 2014 as a “playable teaser” for the Silent Hills reboot he was making with Guillermo Del Toro. When Kojima and Konami had a falling out, Silent Hills was canceled and P.T. got caught in the breakup, being delisted in early 2015. The horror classic has persisted only through emulation and preserved PS4 hard drives—until now.

I think there’s an important distinction between using AI as a development tool and blindly relying on it to create an entire project you don’t understand.

“The idea that something so influential could eventually become practically unplayable never sat right with me,” Xavier added.

“There have been several PC remakes over the years, and I appreciate that people tried to preserve the experience, but none of them ever really satisfied me,” Xavier said. “Something always felt off, whether it was the lighting, the atmosphere, the interactions, or the way certain events played out. They could resemble P.T. visually, but they never truly felt like the original to me.

“And that’s exactly why I wanted to do this differently. I didn’t want to make another interpretation of P.T. or recreate it approximately in another engine. I wanted the actual experience, with its original assets, sounds, animations, and behavior, running natively on PC.”

While the project is “not a modified version or fork of [PS4 emulator] shadPS4,” the emulated version was an “extremely valuable” reference to compare the original game’s behavior to the port.

We’re in weird and wild times for the recompilation scene as gen AI has accelerated the creation of console-to-PC ports, often with janky, hastily-vibecoded results that make good preservation more difficult. Xavier is open about using AI in his workflow, but believes it’s no replacement for “actually knowing what you’re doing.”

“I think there’s an important distinction between using AI as a development tool and blindly relying on it to create an entire project you don’t understand. In my case, I use AI to help with debugging, identifying issues, testing code, and working through problems when I get stuck. It can be incredibly useful for accelerating that process, especially when you’re working alone on something this complicated.

“But I’m still the one responsible for the architecture, the implementation decisions, writing and reviewing the code, and understanding how the different systems fit together. My years of experience with reverse engineering and P.T. are what allow me to direct that process in the first place.”

This is incredible. Unlike the previous decade of fan “recreations” of P.T. for PC which always seemed to miss important but minor details, this is (as far as I can tell?) a 1:1 port of the entire codebase. It creates all of the undocumented behavior I know of perfectly.October 7, 2026

In terms of faithfulness, the port has the seal of approval from at least one person who would know: Lance McDonald, the Australian creator who datamined P.T. and discovered many of its secrets back in the day, is impressed by what he reckons is a “1:1 port of the entire codebase.”
