Google sets a date for Pixel Watch Safety Signal to disappear

Google has confirmed that Safety Signal will stop working on LTE models of the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 from 12 December 2026, removing a feature that lets users access emergency services without a separate cellular plan or their phone nearby.

The company announced the decision in a Google Pixel Watch community post, confirming that affected users will receive emails and push notifications about the change. A 30-day transition period will begin from the date of notification, after which the service will no longer be accessible.

For those unfamiliar, Safety Signal is a feature available to Google Health Premium subscribers that allows compatible Pixel Watches to use cellular connectivity for safety tools such as Emergency SOS and Fall Detection, even without an active smartwatch data plan.

It’s particularly useful for anyone who goes running, hiking or simply leaves their phone at home, as it provides an additional way to access emergency assistance when needed.

With Safety Signal being discontinued, users who want to retain those capabilities while away from their phones will need to arrange a separate cellular plan through their preferred carrier.

However, the change doesn’t mean Emergency SOS and Fall Detection are disappearing entirely. Both features will continue to work on supported Pixel Watches when connected to Wi-Fi or paired with a nearby phone over Bluetooth.

The decision is likely to have the biggest impact on users who rely on their watches as standalone safety devices without paying for an additional mobile connection. Those who usually keep their phones nearby may notice little difference.

Google hasn’t provided a specific reason for discontinuing Safety Signal, although the move suggests the company is shifting away from offering cellular emergency connectivity as part of its premium subscription.

For now, affected Pixel Watch owners have until December to prepare for the change, with a dedicated cellular plan remaining the most reliable alternative for those who regularly leave their phones behind.
