Anthropic said on October 18, 2026 that it is committing a portion of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new entity designed so that its stake grows as the company grows. Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of Anthropic’s shares will be committed, with an additional 2% added at the board’s discretion for every 50% increase in the company’s value above a set baseline, according to the company’s announcement.

Because of how the fund is structured, the more Anthropic grows, the larger the share of the company that can be dedicated expressly to the public good, the announcement said. Anthropic contrasted the approach with pay practices elsewhere in the technology industry, stating that companies commonly grant executives escalating compensation awards and that it is instead routing that equity to the public benefit.

    LLC Structure and Giving Restrictions

Anthropic is establishing the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund as a wholly-owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) nonprofit or another format, a structure the company said gives it adjustability between different forms of giving. Under the announced terms, no Anthropic equity held by the LLC will go toward lobbying or political giving anywhere in the United States or abroad, the company said.

The company said the fund’s flexibility and scale will let it pursue its mission in new ways, naming as possibilities large donations to traditional nonprofits and distributing funds directly to specific populations.

Prior Equity Pledges and In-House Mission Work

Anthropic is organized as a public benefit corporation, and the announcement said most of the company’s mission-driven work takes place inside the company itself: research relevant to AI safety and interpretability, applied biomedical research, and discounted Claude access for nonprofits and scientific institutions. Anthropic said those activities carry both a public benefit component and for-profit value, which is why it houses them directly in the company.

The new fund builds on equity commitments made earlier by co-founders and employees. At the company’s founding, its co-founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings, according to the announcement. Anthropic also operates an equity donation match program in which employees pledge equity that the company matches, and approximately half of employees participate, the company said. Combined with the new commitment, roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares will be dedicated to the public good, the announcement said, plus any additional percentage that could be added if the company reaches specific valuation milestones.

Labor-Market Rationale and the Economic Futures Research Fund

Anthropic named labor market impacts as one example of what the fund could address. The company said AI may generate enormous economic value but could also cause instability for many workers, and that given the pace of AI progress, bolder approaches may be needed. Anthropic said the fund’s versatility would allow it to pursue such approaches.

The announcement noted that Anthropic has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing the issue. That commitment backs the Anthropic Economic Futures Research Fund, whose research agenda the company published on July 22, 2026. In that agenda, Anthropic said the $200 million supports external research on interventions to prepare society for the economic impacts of AI, building on the Economic Policy Framework the company published in June 2026, which proposed programs and policies for a range of scenarios. The stated aim is to build an evidence base on which interventions work, make the economy more flexible and resilient, spread the gains of AI broadly, and reduce the harm that AI-driven disruption could cause, giving workers, firms, and governments room to adapt.

The agenda sets five research priorities: shaping AI’s impact on workers at the firm and workplace level; equipping people to navigate AI-driven transitions; modernizing income support for AI-driven displacement; building worker stakes in AI-driven growth before disruption arrives; and generating new evidence on public investments.

Anthropic said the fund will primarily support projects in the $5 million to $30 million range, with flexibility upward for well-scoped, high-potential-impact projects, and that it will not directly fund anything below $1 million. The fund accepts proposals from accredited universities and other degree-granting institutions, independent research institutes, policy research organizations, and nonprofits with a track record of running field experiments at scale. Individual researchers may serve as principal investigators on institutional proposals, but Anthropic will not consider applications from individuals in a personal capacity. Anthropic described the fund as global in scope while noting that its outlined funding directions are somewhat US-centric, and characterized it as a significant evolution of the Economic Futures program launched a year earlier.

    Next Steps

Anthropic said it will share more about the fund’s structure and governance in the coming months, including the valuation milestones that may add to its stake. The company also said it will report on its progress to date against its mission in an upcoming public benefit report.
