I muted Gemini in my car, but Magic Cue in Android Auto could soon change my mind

Gemini only talks in my car, and only by my rules. It took Google about a year to bench the old Google Assistant and put its generative AI to work as a co-pilot on Android Auto.

The handoff, however, has been a mess. When I’m merging onto a busy highway, I want a command done and out of my way.

Gemini wants to chat. So I muted it.

But the code inside Android Auto points to a feature that might earn Gemini a second chance.

Google Assistant had plenty of problems, but it did the job and went quiet. Gemini doesn’t know when to stop talking.

Generative AI is trained to be helpful to a fault, and in practice that means it talks your ear off. Ask for directions, and you might get a speech about alternate routes and sights along the way.

Calling a contact can turn into a circular routine of searching and asking the same questions again and again. Media is somehow worse.

I remember asking Gemini to play a song on Spotify, and it refused, saying it can’t help play videos while you’re driving.

Magic Cue is hiding in Android Auto’s code

The best voice command is the one you never say

A teardown of Android Auto 17.8 stable and the 17.9 beta found code strings that show Google is preparing to bring Magic Cue to the dashboard, according to an APK Insight report.

Magic Cue debuted on the Google Pixel 10 as an on-device tool, and Google renamed it Proactive Assistance for the Pixel 11.

Google is trying to get out ahead of you here, skipping the voice prompt and handing over the info before you’ve even thought to ask.

One string in the leaked code, settings_magic_cue_description, reads: “With Magic Cue, Gemini can show you personalized, time-saving suggestions.”

In the car, that means the system reads your notification context and puts relevant actions on screen. If a friend texts you about a restaurant, Android Auto pulls up the Google Maps listing on its own.

The car is the right place for an AI that guesses

Your hands and eyes are already spoken for

When your hands are on the wheel, and your eyes are on traffic, every command you don’t have to speak is a win.

Say my partner texts, “Meet me at Joe’s Pizza.” I don’t want to tap the voice button and then dictate my message.

I want a button I can tap once. On the Pixel 11, Proactive Assistance does exactly that by sliding a small sheet onto the screen with a Google Maps summary and a link to start directions.

Adding that feature to the dashboard means you don’t have to turn a text into a navigation command in your head or thumb out an arrival time.

The AI does the legwork in the background and hands you the reply chip on a silver platter.

If Google gets it wrong, there is no third chance

If Google wants drivers like me to trust predictive AI, it needs firm boundaries. Proactive Assistance should stay visual and silent unless the driver asks it to talk.

I think a car is about the worst place to get sound wrong.

An unprompted voice makes me jump every time, and I don’t need my car reading out calendar alerts while I’m going through rush-hour traffic.

We’ve already seen what the Gemini Live stutter does to a drive. The day the AI starts blurting out its guesses without permission, it’s back in AI jail, and this time it won’t get out.

Gemini’s new look already makes room for quiet suggestions

Gemini’s next look could make room for suggestions

Google seems to be building the right interface for this.

Recent leaks from Android Auto 17.9.664004 show a new look for Gemini in the car, with Google bringing its Neural Expressive design language over from phone overlays.

Right now, Gemini shows a soft glow along the bottom or side of the screen while it listens.

A redesign in Android Auto 17.9.664004 replaces the glow with the animated dots of Google’s Neural Expressive design and stretches Gemini’s interface across the full width of the display, with the close and Gemini Live buttons at either end.

This pushes the visual feedback to the edges so it doesn’t cover the navigation map. A hands-off design like that is right up Proactive Assistance’s alley.

A chip could slide out of that glowing border with a one-tap route, then fade away if you ignore it.

I’ll flip the switch back on, on one condition

Gemini makes a lousy co-pilot when you’re behind the wheel. It talks way too much, makes stuff up, and every so often it just glitches out.

Not what you want when you need a quick answer at highway speed. But its knack for connecting the dots across your apps (especially Google’s) could make it a great silent co-pilot.

The leaked code includes a setting called settings_magic_cue_title, labeled “Get Gemini suggestions in your car,” which frames the whole feature as optional. Good.

For now, I’m enjoying a muted dashboard. When this feature arrives, I’ll turn Gemini back on, as long as it stays on the screen and out of my ears until I ask it to talk.
