Dropbox announced on November 5, 2026 that it had agreed to acquire Tigris Data for approximately $350 million in cash, while also introducing DBX Agent Cloud, a storage and data layer for companies and developers building AI applications and agents.

The transaction remains pending. Dropbox’s current report records a definitive agreement signed on November 3, 2026 for all outstanding Tigris equity, with the cash consideration subject to customary purchase-price adjustments. Dropbox expects the deal to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to the satisfaction or waiver of customary closing conditions.

The announcements connect two parts of Dropbox’s AI strategy. The core-product update adds actions for customers working with files already in Dropbox, while DBX Agent Cloud targets companies building AI systems that need content accessible across clouds and compute providers. The Tigris acquisition is intended to accelerate that infrastructure expansion.

    Object Storage Comes First

DBX Agent Cloud starts with standalone, S3-compatible object storage that companies can buy independently and use with familiar tools and supported applications built for Amazon S3. It is designed to operate alongside the clouds, compute providers and developer platforms customers already use, providing a consistent home for content wherever applications run.

The data can include training datasets, model artifacts, images and video. Dropbox plans to add content-processing and filesystem capabilities next: the former would turn documents, images, audio and video into useful AI inputs, while the latter would give applications and agents a persistent place to manage files and continue work across tasks and sessions.

Tigris co-founder and CEO Ovais Tariq said combining Dropbox’s experience operating storage infrastructure at scale with Tigris’s product and developer relationships would help support larger workloads while retaining a focus on reliability, developer experience and direct technical collaboration.

Dropbox Adds AI Actions to Its Core Product

Within the core service, customers can describe what they want to accomplish. Dropbox then identifies relevant content, proposes a plan and carries out supported actions after approval. It works within existing permissions, keeps an action record and lets users review changes and undo supported actions.

Tasks include finding and summarizing content, comparing versions, drafting documents from project context, editing PDFs and images, transcribing recordings, and organizing, moving or renaming files. Several steps can be completed from one request, with results staying connected to the same folders, permissions and sharing context.

Customers can switch supported AI models during a session without losing work context. They can also use Dropbox files in supported tools including ChatGPT, Claude and Muse without repeatedly uploading the content, with resulting work returning to Dropbox.

Dropbox said the new experience had already rolled out to more than 70,000 teams in its product announcement. The initial rollout covers eligible Standard and Advanced teams in the US, UK and Australia, starting in English, with broader availability planned for 2027.

    Tigris Outlines Customer Continuity

Tariq connected the planned acquisition to AI storage demand in Tigris’s announcement: “AI is driving storage demand at a scale this industry has not seen before. Meeting it takes massive scale and a conviction we share with Dropbox: that customers should have the flexibility to run their compute wherever it serves them best, with a product built for developers and agents alike.”

For existing customers, the immediate commitment is continuity. The product, S3-compatible API, pricing with zero egress fees, team and support channels remain unchanged. Tigris will remain a storage layer alongside customers’ chosen clouds, application platforms and GPU providers, and its approach to platform partners continues under Dropbox.

Tigris said Dropbox’s resources and expertise would leave it better positioned to plan for growing capacity needs and invest in the service as demand evolves. It intends to preserve direct technical collaboration and developer focus, and will share transaction updates and further product details as plans develop.

Dropbox’s approach now depends on satisfying two distinct groups: developers buying portable AI storage and teams approving AI actions on their files. With the acquisition still pending and the filesystem and content-processing features still on the roadmap, delivering those commitments is the central open question.
