One of our main bugbears with Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Switch 2 – as incredible as it is – is that it’s overall quite a breezy experience for those already familiar with the original or 3DS release.
As such, we thought it might beneficial if Nintendo were to include a more difficult mode, whether it be a simple Hero Mode in which enemies deal more damage, or perhaps even a port of the reworked Master Quest mode from the GameCube and 3DS.
Our prayers may (emphasis on the ‘may’) soon be answered, as a post from MrCheeze on BlueSky reveals that data found in Ocarina of Time may be hinting at some sort of Master Quest content. You’ll see in the image below that many of the lines of data include ‘MQ’ next to the title ‘DodongoCavern’.

MrCheeze has also provided more information in a follow-up post, stating “Couple strings in the exefs as well giving some context (HasMQ, IsMQModeExist, NewGameMQ, ReleaseMQ)”.
So does this mean Master Quest is on the way? Potentially. We’re not quite ready to put money on it, but it would certainly make sense for Nintendo to include it as part of a DLC expansion, whether free or paid.
Almost all first-party Nintendo games these days include some sort of post-launch DLC, so we’ve no reason to believe Ocarina of Time would be any different. As ever, though, do take all of this with a pinch of salt.
In a recent interview with IGN, producer Eiji Aonuma stated ” I don’t think that we would announce anything specific at this time” when asked whether Master Quest was considered for the Switch 2 remake.
