Total War: Warhammer 40,000 feels like one of those games where you think to yourself, “wait, how doesn’t this exist already?” There have been previous Total War: Warhammer games, three of them in fact, but all set in the original, fantasy setting, not the far flung futuristic sci-fi one. We still don’t know when Creative Assembly’s Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is coming out, though they have shared one thing that will be different compared to the previous Warhammer games: they have no plans for any sequels.

Speaking to Pee Cee Gaemurr, battle product owner Dave Petry explained that instead of making multiple entries of a Warhammer 40,000 game, they’ll just keep updating the one they’re currently making because “it felt like the right thing to do, and it’s just such a huge galaxy to fill.” He explained, “We’re going to have major releases, we’re going to update this game with some significant stuff in varying sizes, but we’re looking at what Total War is and looking at things like Immortal Empires.”

“Like the true experience is the sandbox. That’s what we want to build, and that’s what we want to continue building on, and bringing that into one place so that there are so many different ways that players could enter and still get to experience the whole thing without being siphoned off and only getting to experience a part of it. We just felt that was super super important, and it also puts us in a position to build better together, and to work on the same thing in the same space with the same problems, and just keep making it better together with everyone.”

Essentially, I hope you’re happy to be in this one for the long haul! And if you’re desperate for a sequel before the first one’s even out, perhaps reassess your priorities in life. On top of sharing the lack of sequel plans, a small tease of what to expect was detailed too. The game will start out with four customizable factions, the ever-present Space Marines, Aeldari, Ork, and Astra Militarum. In the future, there are plans for other Space Marine chapters like the Space Wolves, and both Genestealers and Chaos Space Marines are also potential options.

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is currently set for release sometime in 2027, and you can wishlist it on Steam here.
