Apple has reportedly canceled innovative product that was ‘Ternus priority’

A new Omdia research note today outlined Apple’s reported Mac and iPad roadmap for the years ahead, and it also mentioned that a key rumored product has been canceled. Here are the details.

Foldable iPad/Mac hybrid that was John Ternus ‘priority’ has reportedly been canceled

For years, rumors have suggested that the iPhone will be just the first Apple product line to adopt foldable displays.

Reporting suggests that a larger, roughly 18- or 20-inch foldable iPad/Mac hybrid device has been in the works for years. At one point it was believed to be coming as early as 2026 before later being pushed to 2028.

Earlier this year, Mark Gurman called the product a “Ternus priority” but also suggested it may never launch. He wrote:

Apple has been working on a roughly 20-inch foldable iPad. This device has been a Ternus priority but may end up being a wacky experiment that doesn’t see the light of day, according to several people who have worked on it.

You can find a good overview of prior rumors about the product here.

According to today’s Omdia report, it seems Gurman’s suspicions may have been right. It says: “product plans for 16.1-inch to 18-inch foldable MacBooks have been canceled.”

Based on prior rumors, this seems to be the same product previously covered by Gurman and others.

It’s very possible Apple is taking a “wait and see” approach with this foldable product as it gauges reception to the foldable iPhone Ultra. If iPhone Ultra is a hit, maybe the company will accelerate development of the iPad/MacBook hybrid.

But perhaps with the current memory crisis causing product pricing to rise so significantly already, Apple doesn’t see a current path forward for an ultra-premium, innovative foldable device like this.

What do you think of the rumored foldable iPad/MacBook being canceled? Let us know in the comments.
