Google recently announced that it’s teaming up with Nevoya and the Center for Green Market Activation towards an initiative that will launch an all-electric freight route between Houston and Dallas. That said, the collaboration will use 25 electric semi-trucks and dedicated charging infrastructure, and Google will acquire environmental attribute certificates to offset its supply chain logistics emissions.

According to Google, the initiative is part of a wider 63-truck project that stands as the largest deployment of class 8 zero-emission trucks in Texas. For those unfamiliar with the technicality of the terms involved, a class 8 zero-emission vehicle is a heavy-duty commercial semi-truck weighing over 33,000 pounds (or around 14.9 metric tons) that runs entirely on electricity or hydrogen instead of diesel.

Throughout the duration of the contracts, the fleet is projected to cover 11 million miles annually and slash carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 92,000 metric tons compared to conventional diesel fleets. Google adds that by aggregating environmental attribute procurement with other corporate partners, the project aims to accelerate market demand for zero-emission freight technology.

In other recent Google news, the company also worked with Cathay Pacific to reduce the warming impact of airplane contrails. This comes not too long after the company announced its joint initiative with the UK government back in August, which also covers similar areas for scientific research.
