The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have only just landed in customers’ hands, but some early owners in Reddit are already reporting unexpected restarts accompanied by something called a “panic-full” log.
The reports started appearing shortly after the phones went on sale on 18 September, with complaints surfacing in multiple sources, including Reddit. Some users say their new iPhone 18 Pro has suddenly frozen and rebooted multiple times, sometimes only hours after being set up.
That certainly doesn’t sound ideal for a brand-new flagship phone, but I wouldn’t panic just yet. At this stage, there isn’t enough evidence to suggest that every iPhone 18 Pro is affected, nor do we know whether the underlying cause is hardware or software.
What is happening with the iPhone 18 Pro?
The reports don’t all describe exactly the same scenario, although there are some interesting similarities.
Several owners said their phone restarted after Face ID failed to authenticate, including while opening banking apps or using Apple Wallet. One user reportedly experienced several crashes associated with Face ID, while others have encountered unexpected reboots while doing completely unrelated things such as watching videos, listening to music or simply using the flashlight.
Face ID does seem to appear frequently in early reports, but there are enough crashes occurring elsewhere that the real cause could be something deeper within iOS 27, a hardware component, or potentially several unrelated problems producing the same symptom.
Some customers who contacted Apple have reportedly been offered replacements or refunds, while others say Apple diagnostics suggested either software or hardware could be responsible. Apple has not publicly identified a cause at the time of writing.
What does ‘panic-full’ actually mean?
If you’ve been reading about this issue online, the term panic-full might make the problem sound considerably scarier than it actually explains. A panic log is essentially a record generated when iOS experiences a serious system-level failure that forces the device to restart.
In other words, seeing a panic-full entry confirms that something caused the operating system to crash. It doesn’t necessarily tell you what caused it. You can check for these logs on an iPhone by going to:
Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data
If a system-level crash has occurred, you may find entries beginning with names such as panic-full followed by the date and other information.
For most people, however, opening the file itself isn’t going to be particularly enlightening. These diagnostic logs are highly technical and are primarily useful to Apple engineers and technicians when troubleshooting the device.
Does a panic-full log mean your iPhone 18 Pro is defective?
Not necessarily.
Modern smartphones are effectively small computers, and an isolated system crash can happen for many reasons. A software bug, driver problem or unusual combination of events could potentially trigger a restart without there being anything physically wrong with the phone.
I’d be far more concerned if an iPhone 18 Pro were generating multiple panic logs and repeatedly rebooting.
What should you do if your iPhone 18 Pro suddenly restarts?
If it happens once, I personally wouldn’t rush straight back to the Apple Store. First, make sure your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS available. Early iOS releases tend to receive updates fairly quickly as Apple collects crash data from millions of newly activated devices.
You can also check the Analytics Data section mentioned above to see whether a panic-full entry appeared around the time of the restart.
One isolated entry isn’t necessarily cause for concern. But if you’re seeing several of them over a short period, especially if your iPhone is repeatedly rebooting during normal use, I would contact Apple Support while the device is still new.
Backing up the phone to iCloud or a computer is also worth doing before further troubleshooting.
If the phone completely freezes and becomes unresponsive, Apple’s official force-restart process for Face ID-equipped iPhones is to quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, and then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
That will get a frozen phone running again, although it obviously doesn’t solve whatever caused repeated crashes in the first place. Apple also recommends keeping iOS updated when dealing with persistent startup or crashing problems, and servicing the device if those problems continue.
But if yours starts generating multiple panic-full logs within its first few days of use, that’s something I’d definitely document and take to Apple rather than simply hoping it goes away.
With the iPhone 18 Pro having only launched on 18 September, we’re still very much in the early stages of figuring out whether this is an isolated launch-week annoyance or something Apple will need to address more broadly.
