Google should release the stable build of Android 17’s first Quarterly Platform Release in the first half of September. But the company is already busy testing QPR2, due out in December. The third beta, which dropped in mid-August, introduced several customization options. Just two weeks later, Google is pushing the fourth public beta, adding even more customization options.
Building on support for AI icons and themes, Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 adds status bar customization support for system and notification icons. The options are limited, and you can’t change how the icons themselves look.
Instead, you can hide status bar icons for mute and vibrate modes when your Pixel is in those modes. You can also select if you only want to see status bar icons for priority notifications or all notifications. You will find these options tucked under Settings > System > Status Bar.
Another notable change in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 is an updated kernel for Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 devices. While Google’s official release notes don’t mention this, the newer kernel could improve battery life and performance, making your Pixel feel smoother.
Plenty of bug fixes and stability improvements in this beta
With Beta 4, Android 17 QPR2 also reaches Platform Stability. That means Google will no longer make any API-related changes in future beta builds, and developers can start testing and updating their apps accordingly.
Google’s release notes for Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 highlight several bug fixes:
- Enabling the “render apps below the cutout area” developer setting caused a transparent status bar on the launcher after exiting fullscreen video playback.
- A thermal management issue that caused devices to overheat and unexpectedly reboot during use.
- An issue preventing screen mirroring to external USB-C XR glasses.
- Gesture navigation became unresponsive when rendering apps below the display cutout.
- The 80% battery limit optimization caused excessive charge times during the final 2% threshold.
- A launcher UI issue where searching for apps in the app drawer failed to process text input.
- Invoking the power menu via hardware buttons caused a missing background blur effect behind the navigation bar.
- An issue where phone call audio defaulted to the phone speaker instead of connected Bluetooth devices.
- A Recents app switcher rendering bug where the first task card could intermittently freeze and visually clip behind other apps during horizontal scrolling.
- An audio service resource lock triggered during screen recording that prevented microphone usage across apps and input methods like Gboard and Gemini until a device restart.
- A System UI visual inconsistency where turning off the screen from the home screen triggered a plain fade instead of the power-button screen-off animation.
- A low-contrast rendering issue in dark mode where the connected Wi-Fi settings cog icon was barely visible.
- Enabling 3D mode on connected smart glasses resulted in a blank screen.
- A User Interface issue that prevented the notification bar from being pulled all the way down.
- An issue where WebGL applications could freeze or crash the browser process when combining shadow maps with vertex color attributes by resolving an invalid memory read in the PowerVR GPU driver’s texture state processing.
- Low-light Face Unlock failures bypassed Fingerprint Unlock and forced PIN entry.
If your Pixel is enrolled in the Android beta program, it should receive an OTA for the latest beta. Alternatively, you can sideload the OTA or flash the factory image manually as well.
