Bayesian Health announced on September 2, 2026 that its FDA-cleared sepsis flagging device has been approved for a New Technology Add-on Payment, the Medicare mechanism that temporarily reimburses hospitals for using qualifying new technologies. Beginning October 1, 2026, hospitals using the continuous AI sepsis monitor can receive additional Medicare payment for eligible inpatient cases. The company described the approval as the first reimbursement pathway of its kind for pre-suspicion sepsis monitoring.

The approval was granted under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ fiscal year 2027 Inpatient Prospective Payment System final rule, which sets payment rates and policies for acute care hospitals. It follows the device’s FDA clearance in May 2026 and the agency’s earlier Breakthrough Device Designation. According to Bayesian Health, the decision makes its product the first continuous sepsis monitoring technology with both FDA clearance and a dedicated Medicare reimbursement pathway.

    How the Add-on Payment Works

Standard hospital payment rates are built from historical claims data, so a hospital adopting a newly approved technology absorbs its cost inside a rate that predates it. NTAP closes that gap with a temporary add-on payment, layered on top of the standard diagnosis-related group payment, for cases where a qualifying technology was used and costs exceed what the bundled payment covers.

From October 1, 2026, hospitals using Bayesian’s sepsis solution will be able to bill for eligible use of the technology across adult Medicare fee-for-service inpatient admissions it monitors, spanning an estimated 739 diagnosis-related groups, the company said in its announcement. Eligible discharges qualify for an add-on payment of up to $61.84 per case, and the pathway remains in place for up to three years. The company’s reimbursement guide describes the payment as claim by claim, with no separate authorization, and states that the eligible groups represent roughly 97 percent of all diagnosis-related groups in the inpatient prospective payment system.

CMS determines which technologies receive add-on payments through an annual application process tied to its rulemaking cycle. The agency’s guidance sets out three eligibility criteria: the technology must be new, it must be costly enough that the standard diagnosis-related group rate is inadequate, and it must demonstrate substantial clinical improvement over existing options. Devices in the FDA’s Breakthrough Devices Program may qualify through an alternative pathway that does not require demonstrating substantial clinical improvement. Add-on payments are generally limited to the lesser of 65 percent of the technology’s cost or 65 percent of the amount by which case costs exceed the standard payment. The fiscal year 2027 final rule was displayed on July 31, 2026 and published on August 4, 2026, per the rule’s CMS page, with new rates taking effect for discharges on or after October 1, 2026.

    Regulatory and Clinical Background

The sepsis flagging device received FDA 510(k) clearance on May 12, 2026, which the company announced at the time as the first clearance for a continuous AI sepsis monitor. That clearance built on a prior FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, the same program whose alternative NTAP pathway CMS recognizes in its guidance.

Bayesian says its device was validated in a prospective study published in Nature Medicine, which it describes as one of the largest evaluations of AI in clinical care. According to the company, patients whose clinicians engaged with the system’s alerts showed an 18.2 percent reduction in mortality and received antibiotics a median of 1.85 hours sooner. The company also reports that those results have since been matched or exceeded across a diverse set of health systems, with clinician adoption consistently above 80 percent, faster antibiotic delivery, lower utilization, and lower sepsis mortality. These performance figures are the company’s own characterizations.

Sepsis is the body’s extreme, life-threatening response to an infection, and without fast treatment it can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death, according to the CDC. The agency estimates that about 1.7 million adults in the United States develop sepsis each year and that at least 350,000 adults who develop it die during hospitalization or are discharged to hospice. Rapid treatment, including antibiotics given as soon as possible, is central to improving survival.

An analysis from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality found that more than 2 million Americans were hospitalized with sepsis in 2021, with hospital costs exceeding $52 billion that year. The agency describes sepsis as the most common reason for hospitalizations after births and notes that early recognition and treatment remain central challenges for hospitals.

    Company Statements

“Early detection should be standard infrastructure in every hospital,” said Suchi Saria, Bayesian Health’s founder and CEO, in the announcement. She said the approval removes friction so that what she called proven technology reaches more clinicians and patients faster, and emphasized signal quality clinicians can trust rather than reimbursement itself.

Martin Doerfler, the company’s chief medical officer, said hospitals should not have to choose between financial discipline and getting ahead of the deadliest condition facing their patients, and described the decision as aligning the payment model with clinical reality.

The NTAP approval marks Bayesian Health’s second major regulatory and policy milestone of 2026, following the May FDA clearance. The company also recently expanded its physician leadership team and partnered with Mayo Clinic to bring its platform to palliative care, applying the same real-time intelligence built for sepsis across additional service lines, according to the announcement.
