One happy upside to Double Fine’s newly-regained independence is the return of Amnesia Fortnight, the semi-regular in-house game jam in which everyone stops what they’re doing and spends two weeks pitching and developing prototypes for new games. The 2026 edition of the event—seemingly the first since Microsoft acquired Double Fine in 2019—launched a Kickstarter campaign on August 31, and its $400,000 goal has already been surpassed.
The Amnesia Fortnight crowdfunding campaign serves two purposes. It raises money for Double Fine, which is good, but it also grants power: Just like in a real democracy, people who are willing to spend money will get to sway the process in voting for which of the 26 game pitches actually get made, and the more you spend the more influence you have. At the $15 tier, for instance, your vote only counts for half, but at $30 you get a full vote—and if you go up to $60, your vote is doubled—a single vote cast counts for two! What a great system.
Voting will close on September 6, following the conclusion of PAX, after which the Amnesia Fortnight game jam actually begins: Over the following two weeks, the top four finalists will be built into playable demos, which will then be put out to the public for final voting.

The Kickstarter ends on September 30, after which the big winner will be revealed, and then polished and unleashed out into the world. If it’s especially good, it might even be made into a “real game”: Previous Double Fine games including Costume Quest, Iron Brigade, and Stacking, and the Compton’s Cook-off level in Psychonauts 2, all began as Amnesia Fortnight prototypes.

There are many more, 26 in total, so you’ll want to check out the Kickstarter page if you’re interested in throwing your weight behind any of them. Insolation is my pick of the litter—not that I have any great affinity for survival games, but I’m a sucker for ‘sad lonely robot at the end of the world’ stuff. Gets me every time.
As is the way with Kickstarter, there are also stretch goals—one stretch goal, to be precise: If the campaign earns $100 million, Double Fine will make Brütal Legend 2. “Yes, really.” Is it going to happen? No, not really: Never say never and all that, but Shenmue 3 was (and as far as I know still is) the most-funded videogame project in Kickstarter history, and it finished with $6.3 million. So yeah, that’s a big mountain to climb.
It’s possible that other stretch goals are on the way, but Double Fine said “we’ll have to wait and see.”
