During a surprise appearance at Final Fantasy 14 Berlin Fan Fest, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed his desire to release the remake trilogy’s finale on physical media. With the announcement that the game will be released on April 8, 2027, we know now that a physical edition is happening. Square Enix, however, has made some very important compromises.
An official Square Enix press release revealed that the physical edition of Revelation will include the game on one disc but that it will require an internet connection to download additional game data to be playable. This is better than some modern physical editions that include only a digital redemption code (I’m looking at you, Grand Theft Auto 6). Square Enix has previously released the remake trilogy with true physical releases. Both Remake and Rebirth contained multi-disc cases that made it possible for players to access the game with no need for an internet connection. Even if one disc is better than none, the requirement for internet access is a disappointing shift in policy right at the trilogy’s conclusion.
Similarly, the physical Switch 2 edition of Revelation will include a Game-Key card.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation‘s different editions explained
Beyond physical or digital, there are a number of different editions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation that players can purchase, each with their own benefits. The Standard Edition costs $69.99, and the physical version includes either a special Magic: The Gathering card at certain retailers or a folded poster if purchased through Amazon. The physical Deluxe Edition costs $99.99 and includes a mini-soundtrack, artbook, and steelbook case. The digital Premium Edition costs the same but also includes the Story Expansion Pass and 24-hour early access to the game. The Premium Plus Edition includes everything in the Premium Edition plus the digital soundtrack, artbook, and a handful of in-game items; it costs $109.99. There is also the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Series Trilogy Edition for $84.99, which grants immediate access to Remake and Rebirth to those who digitally pre-order.
The most expensive version, however, is the $349.99 physical Collector’s Edition. The Square Enix store exclusive includes everything from the Deluxe Edition as well as the Story Expansion Pass and a handful of exclusive in-game items. But the main event is the premium statue of Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth standing back-to-back. Considering it costs less than most consoles nowadays, the Collector’s Edition almost seems like a bargain. Almost.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be released on April 8, 2027, on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
