There’s much more to the TCL P80 Ultra than standout screen tech

    Add Android Authority on Google:

The most compelling phones don’t make you choose between strong everyday hardware and something genuinely different. Unique features can add plenty to the experience, but they don’t paper over the cracks if you’re not getting the specs your money deserves.

TCL’s new P80 Series arrives this month with the specs to back up its headline features. The P80 Ultra leads the range with hardware that compares strongly with rivals in the same price range, making a strong case for the P80 Series as one of the best-value smartphone options in its segment. The P80 Pro and P80 carry many of those strengths further down the lineup, while the Ultra and Pro add industry-exclusive NXTPAPER technology as a clear competitive advantage.

    Strong hardware comes first

    Paul Jones / Android Authority

The camera immediately gives the P80 Ultra an edge over its rivals. Its class-leading 50MP 3x periscope telephoto sits alongside a 50MP main camera with a large 1/1.56-inch sensor, while neither the Samsung A57 nor the Redmi Note 15 Pro Plus has a dedicated telephoto camera. That means true optical image quality at both 1x and 3x, with greater reach for shots like 6x portraits. The main camera adds an f/1.88 aperture, OIS and EIS stabilization, and Dual Native ISO for clearer results across different lighting conditions.

Then there’s the screen. The 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED Sunlight Display packs 447 pixels per inch — around 16% more than the Samsung A57’s 385PPI panel. Peak brightness reaches up to 3,200 nits, compared with up to 1,900 nits on the A57, while the 120Hz refresh rate, up to 100% DCI-P3 coverage, and side bezels down to 1.38mm round out a best-in-segment display package.

The camera immediately gives the P80 Ultra an edge over its rivals.

If that weren’t enough, the P80 Ultra’s ultra-slim, lightweight design was co-created with materials and CMF expert Chris Lefteri, with its colors and in-hand feel refined through consumer testing in major cities worldwide. You can choose from Sunlit Gold, Midnight Blue, and Burgundy.

Performance is equally serious. Inside is the 4nm MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite, backed by 8GB of RAM with up to 16GB of RAM Expansion and up to 512GB of storage. A 5,800mAh battery and 45W Super Fast Charging provide plenty of everyday staying power. The P80 Ultra also gets up to four OS upgrades and up to seven years of security updates. Google Gemini, Circle to Search, AI Smart Translator, and other smart tools are on board too, giving the P80 Ultra plenty of software smarts to match the hardware.

And this isn’t only an Ultra story. Against its same-segment rivals, the P80 Pro offers the same best-in-segment AMOLED Sunlight Display, while its 5,800mAh battery is larger than the Samsung A37’s 5,000mAh cell. The standard P80 also compares strongly with the Samsung A27, pairing a 1.5K display with 45W charging — versus FHD and 25W on the Samsung — and coming in 22g lighter.

NXTPAPER gives the P80 Ultra and Pro a real edge

    Paul Jones / Android Authority

The P80 Ultra already makes a strong case on conventional hardware, but NXTPAPER is where it sets itself apart. Available on the P80 Ultra and P80 Pro, the latest generation draws on TCL’s wider display expertise through a hardware-based Natural Soft-light System, Nano Crystal Shield Glass, and 24-hour Proactive Eye Comfort Technology.

You’ll notice the benefit, with Nano-etched anti-glare technology helping to cut reflections in bright environments, while hardware-level low-blue-light and flicker-free dimming make low-light viewing and longer sessions easier on the eyes. Nature-inspired Light Conversion uses up to 95% circular polarization, helping keep the display clear outdoors even while you’re wearing polarized sunglasses.

Hardware-level low-blue-light and flicker-free dimming make low-light viewing and longer sessions easier on the eyes.

Then there’s the dedicated NXTPAPER Key. One slide switches the phone into its e-reader experience, with Paper Mode offering four paper-like styles and Max Ink Mode providing a distraction-free black-and-white option. For anyone who spends a lot of time reading articles, documents, or e-books on a phone, it’s a game-changer.

NXTPAPER represents 10 years of technology expertise and five generations of innovation, with the P80 Ultra becoming the first smartphone to combine it with an AMOLED display.

More importantly, you aren’t being asked to trade away the fundamentals to get it. The P80 Series already competes strongly on the hardware that determines whether a phone is worth your money, while the Ultra and Pro add a display experience that their rivals can’t match. That’s a pretty convincing recipe for one of the best-value smartphone options in the segment.
