Lenovo’s new ThinkCentre X Ultra is a very different type of AI PC from the thin-and-light laptops dominating the category.

The compact desktop can be configured with up to an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 Series processor and 128GB of unified memory, packing workstation-class resources into a chassis measuring just 1.6 liters.

Unlike the ThinkBook 14 Gen 9, where AI acceleration is primarily aimed at productivity features and applications, the ThinkCentre X Ultra is much closer to a machine specifically designed for substantial local AI workloads.

The 128GB unified-memory configuration is particularly important.

For larger local AI models, memory can become as important as raw processor performance. AMD’s Ryzen AI Max platform combines CPU, GPU, and AI acceleration with a large unified memory pool that can be shared by the processor and integrated graphics, making considerably larger models practical than on conventional PCs with modest amounts of dedicated graphics memory.

The Ryzen AI Max+ systems are dedicated to advanced local inference, AI development, and models reaching as high as 128 billion parameters on appropriately configured machines.

Lenovo pushes the envelope with the X Ultra by allowing up to four systems to be connected as a cluster.

According to Lenovo, combining multiple X Ultra machines expands both compute and available memory resources and can support larger models, longer context windows, multiple AI agents, and several simultaneous AI requests.

That makes the X Ultra interesting for developers and companies that want to run AI locally without immediately moving workloads into a rack-mounted server or cloud infrastructure.

Lenovo is also integrating the AMD Ryzen AI Developer Center, providing access to preconfigured AI models, tools, and workflows for both Windows and Linux. The objective is to reduce the amount of setup required before companies can start experimenting with local inference and AI applications.

Despite the hardware, the ThinkCentre X Ultra remains extremely compact at only 1.6L. Lenovo says its thermal design is intended to maintain performance while keeping operation cool and quiet under sustained workloads. We would need to test that claim because sustained AI inference can place significant loads on both processor and memory for extended periods.

Another unusual feature is adaptive lighting, which translates system activity into visible status information on the machine itself. It is a small detail, but potentially useful when several units are running together. Enterprise features include Lenovo ThinkShield security, AMD PRO technologies, and AMD DASH remote-management support.

The ThinkCentre X Ultra starts at $3,699 and will be available beginning in November 2026.
