Apple is holding its big annual iPhone launch event on September 9, and it’s widely expected to unveil the iPhone Ultra on that day. This will be its first foldable smartphone, and it’s been a very long time coming. According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company has practically been working on it for a decade.
Interestingly, Apple wanted the iPhone Ultra to cost $1,999, but it got hit by the memory chip shortage and insane price hikes, so now it’s probably going to come out starting at $2,199. However, the top configuration (presumably with 1TB of storage) might go as high as $3,000.
The report also tells us to expect a practically invisible crease, as well as a titanium and aluminum hinge system, some custom cover glass developed in partnership with Corning, and construction quality that Apple reportedly believes is “industry-leading” for the foldable market.
The iPhone Ultra is once again said to come with a 7.8″ folding screen and a 5.5″ cover display. Unfolded, its proportions should “resemble those of a Magic Trackpad”, while folded it should be about the size of a passport.
