During the September 2026 Nintendo Direct, many new games were announced, and some even shadow-dropped today. The surprise launches ranged from surprising ports of beloved games to Nintendo Switch Online additions and demos for several upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 games. Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion
Ahead of Final Fantasy VII Revelation’s launch on Nintendo Switch 2 next April, Square Enix has decided to port Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion to Switch 2. If you want to learn more about the mysterious backstories of Cloud, Zach, and Aerith, this prequel is definitely worth playing.
Meccha Chameleon
Hide-and-seek game Meccha Chameleon has been one of 2026’s surprise indie hits, going viral across YouTube, Twitch, and other social media platforms. The Japanese-developed game is now coming to consoles, starting with Nintendo Switch 2 today.
Star Fox Adventures on Nintendo Switch Online
Alongside the announcement of a free update for Nintendo Switch 2’s Star Fox remake, Nintendo confirmed that it is bringing Star Fox Adventures to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass’ GameCube classics catalog. This Rare game is different from most Star Fox titles, as it’s mostly a third-person action-adventure game set on an alien planet.
Cairn demo
Cairn is the latest release from The Game Bakers and is a thoughtful and meditative game about ascending a mountain at all costs. Its climbing mechanics are a lot more complex than something like Jusant, too. While the port isn’t out until 2027, a demo shadow-dropped during the Direct.
Mario Kart World Version 1.8.0 update
In a free update for Mario Kart World, Nintendo made 10 Super Mario Kart courses that could be found in Free Roam’s open world available in the Vs. Racing mode. Two new rallies were also added to the Knockout Tour mode.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World demo
While the next creature-collecting Dragon Quest RPG won’t be out until December, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it sizzle reel moment confirmed that a Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World demo is launching today. Definitely check it out to see whether the game is for you or not.
Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-
During a sizzle reel toward the end of Direct, Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- briefly showed up and shadow-dropped. If you haven’t heard of this one, it was the first-ever Mystery Dungeon game, which would go on to cross over with franchises like Pokémon and Final Fantasy. It’s out now on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
Fading Echo demo
The final surprise release of the Direct was a demo for Fading Echo. This upcoming third-person action-adventure game is out on September 17, so you won’t have to wait long for the full thing either.
