Probably not. But we can hope, right?

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy popped up the Nintendo Direct on September 8, a full five years after it first launched to solid reviews, good fan feedback and not enough copies sold to keep Square Enix happy.

It’s a shame because the game was actually bloody good.. In particuilar, it excelled at its character work, delivering a team of misfit idiots who were equal measures funny, charming, stupid and likeable. And stupid. Again. A fun story and good presentation were layered on top of that, and underneath it all was a solid action game with some cool ideas.

Point is, a sequel has never been mentioned, which is why it’s appearence at the Nintendo Direct was surprising. Apparently it’s getting an “Encore Edition”. Interestingly, it’s a little more than a straight port because it’s getting some extras like new outfits for the team. It’s nothing excessive, but it means they are doing a little bit extra.

And the game has found some success since the launched. About a year after the game launched, Eidos Montreal said it had managed to reach 8 million players. Not sales, mind you, but players. That’s because it got added to things like Game Pass. Hell, it’s on PS Plus Extra right now, and you should go play it.

All of this has raised some hopes that a sequel could happen. Fans are already asking that exact question underneath the announcement on the game’s official X page.

The answer is probably no. Chances are, this is just Square Enix seeing an easy opportunity to get some extra cash out of an easy port. It might sell a little bit, but likely not enough to push Square Enix into doing anything else with it.

But……there’s always a chance, right? If the game somehow founds enough traction on Switch 2, it could be enough to persuade Square Enix to make a sequel, or for Marvel to shop around for someone willing to do something similiar with the Guadians of the Galaxy.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition  will land on Switch 2 on November. There’s no word on whether Xbox, PC or PlayStation will get the new edition.
