The iPhone Duo is real, and after years of watching Samsung own the foldable space largely unchallenged, Apple has finally entered the room. Based on everything shown at Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9, this looks like it could be the foldable phone that actually makes the category go mainstream.
Everything looks and feels perfect. Very well thought of.
What Apple Announced
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, opening like a book from a compact 5.4-inch outer display into a 7.6-inch inner screen. Apple says the inner display is the largest ever on an iPhone: 50% more screen area than the iPhone 18 Pro Max while the outer screen still gives you about 90% of the usable area of the iPhone 18 Pro when closed. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content doesn’t get mangled when you switch between them.
Inside is the same A20 Pro chip powering the iPhone 18 Pro (Apple’s first 2nm chip) paired with a dual-battery architecture that Apple claims delivers up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display. The frame is machined titanium, the back is Ceramic Shield, and the hinge is made up of over 100 precision components. It carries an IP68 rating, comes in Star White and Night Sky, and starts at A$3,499, with pre-orders opening October 16 and availability from October 23.
Touch ID replaces Face ID here, built into the side button. You can also unlock it with an Apple Watch.
My Take
From everything I’ve seen in the presentation and hands-on videos, Apple hasn’t just entered the foldable market. It looks like they’ve thought through every possible way you’d actually use this thing. And we know Apple is no rush to be the first in everything. They want to wait, see, and get everything right.
Most foldables feel like they were designed around the hardware first, with the software experience bolted on. The Duo feels like the opposite. iOS 27 adapts specifically to the fold position. You get Split View multitasking when fully open, hands-free FaceTime when propped at an angle, StandBy mode without needing to plug in, and a continuous experience as content transitions between the outer and inner screens. Every orientation, every fold position, every use case seems to have been considered.
That said, we won’t actually know how well any of this holds up until proper reviews land. Apple events are polished productions, and “it looked flawless in the keynote” is not the same as “the crease is unnoticeable” or “the hinge still feels tight after six months.” Those are the things that have tripped up every other foldable maker, including Samsung. So while my gut says Apple has done this right, I’ll reserve full judgement until the hands-on reviews are in – most likely some time next week for the embargo date.
What It Means for Australians
At A$3,499, the iPhone Duo is not priced for everyone. It’s firmly in early-adopter territory. That’s nearly A$1,200 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and A$700 more than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. For that premium, you’re getting Apple’s ecosystem, a first-generation product, and the bragging rights of being among the first to own one. But it’s also nice to have a foldable iPhone where you can see bigger display when you need it.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s biggest bet on hardware in nearly two decades. From what we’ve seen so far, it looks like a very well-placed bet and push what Apple can do. The iPhone 18 Pro on the other hand, feels a bit underwhelmed as upgrading from iPhone 17 Pro is a hard hit and miss.
