Apple’s iPhone Duo folds open into the biggest screen an iPhone has ever had. It also costs $700 to $800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. And it leaves out features those phones still have.
Deciding whether the fold is worth the extra money? Here’s what you’d gain, and what you’d give up, by picking Apple’s first foldable over its regular flagships.
The screen you gain
Open it up, and the iPhone Duo shows a 7.6-inch inner display. That’s about 50 percent bigger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen. It’s 80 percent bigger than the standard iPhone 18 Pro. Closed, its 5.4-inch outer screen still works like a normal iPhone.
Apple built iOS 27 so the dock and controls slide to the edge automatically once you open the phone. Your thumb never has to reach across the full screen. That big inner display also supports the Apple Pencil, a first for any iPhone. Neither Pro model works with a stylus at all.
What you give up to get it
The camera is the biggest trade-off. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max both get a true telephoto lens, plus Apple’s first variable aperture camera. It shifts between four settings for sharper low-light shots. The Duo only has two rear lenses and no dedicated telephoto. Its zoom falls well short of the Pro models.
Face ID is gone too. The Duo uses Touch ID built into the side button, since a folding body leaves no room for Face ID’s sensors. You’ll also miss LiDAR, which helps the Pro models focus faster in low light. The Pro-only photo and video tools built for professional editing are missing as well.
Battery life leans toward the traditional phones too. The Pro Max plays up to 45 hours of video on a charge. The Duo tops out at 44 hours on its smaller outer screen, and drops to 31 hours if you’re watching on the big inner display. Charging is slower on the Duo as well, taking about 20 minutes to reach half a charge against 15 minutes for the Pro models.
Then there’s the price. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, and the Pro Max at $1,299, for that same storage. The gap holds all the way up the lineup. A maxed-out 2TB Duo runs $3,199.
Should you wait for the Duo?
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are already up for pre-order, and they ship September 18. The Duo doesn’t open for pre-order until October 16. It reaches stores a week later, on October 23.
Would you use a bigger screen every day for work or reading? Then the Duo earns its price tag. Want to keep Face ID, the better camera, and longer battery life instead, and get your phone almost five weeks sooner? The iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max is still the safer buy.
