Marvel’s Wolverine combat is brutal, focusing on tearing enemies apart with Logan’s deadly claws. As players progress through the game, their combat kit will expand by unlocking Special Techniques.
Special Techniques is Marvel’s Wolverine’s version of skills, which can be assigned to a combat wheel and accessed by pressing R2 and then the corresponding button. While these abilities are on a cooldown, they are extremely powerful and can make a major difference in how well you perform.

Spiral Strike
Corkscrew Into Your Enemies
The worst Special Technique in Marvel’s Wolverine is Spiral Strike. This ability causes Wolverine to shoot forward like a corkscrew, blasting through a group of enemies. While it sounds good on paper, the Tornado Spin ability (which we will cover a bit later down this list) is essentially the same thing but covers more ground and allows the player to have more control over who it hits.
Spiral Strike can come in handy if you are being overwhelmed by a group of enemies, but only if all these enemies are attacking you from the front. Simply put, the other six Special Techniques are much more useful than Spiral Strike.
- Spiral Strike Lv 2: Can be used twice in rapid succession.
- Spiral Strike Lv 3: Can be used thrice in rapid succession.

Knee Breaker
Straight to the Face
Knee Breaker is actually a great Special Technique, but only in certain situations. This Special Technique has Wolverine shooting his knee up into the face of an enemy, instantly stunning them and opening them up for a barrage of attacks. It’s incredibly useful in one-on-one scenarios, such as when fighting against elite enemies or bosses.
Since Knee Breaker is only really great in these types of scenarios, it doesn’t make it high up on our list. Still, if you find yourself having trouble with the elite enemies or those Reavers who hold a shield, then the Knee Breaker Special Technique might work for you for a quick way to stun them.
- Knee Breaker Lv 2: Increased Stagger damage, using Knee Breaker to interrupt Power/Reckless attacks, and recharge it faster.
- Knee Breaker Lv 3: Increased Stagger damage, deals Stagger damage in an area on impact.

Relentless
Free Health
Relentless is an essential Special Technique, especially if you are playing on Marvel’s Wolverine’s hardest difficulty. Relentless causes Logan to heal himself for a short duration, which can be crucial during challenging mob fights or epic boss encounters. There were plenty of times when Relentless saved me from dying as it replenishes a good amount of health.
However, Relentless is also the only Special Technique in Marvel’s Wolverine that does not deal any damage to the enemies you are fighting. Considering this game is all about dealing as much damage as possible and constantly attacking to dismantle waves of enemies, Relentless doesn’t make it higher on the list. Still, I recommend having it equipped in one of the slots in case of an emergency.
- Relentless Lv 2: Shrug off basic attacks, increased duration.
- Relentless Lv 3: Triggers a healing burst when near death.

Tornado Spin
Best for Crowd Control
Even though Tornado Spin is the first Special Technique players unlock in Marvel’s Wolverine, it is still one of the best in the game. This ability has Logan spinning in a circle multiple times with his arms extended out, hitting all the surrounding enemies with his deadly claws. This is the best Special Technique for crowd control, as it is a great way to defeat the weaker enemies and damage the elites all at once with the press of a button.
The greatest part of Tornado Spin is that it allows the player to have full control of Wolverine while he is using it. This means you can control spin, hitting an even larger circle and dealing damage to enemies that may be a little farther away from your location. This was my go-to Special Technique when I played through Marvel’s Wolverine and definitely my most-used.
- Tornado Spin Lv 2: Longer spin, breaks blocks, interrupts most attacks.
- Tornado Spin Lv 3: Increased reach and damage. Breaks all blocks, and interrupts attacks.

Overwhelm
Heavy Lifting
Overwhelm is a Special Technique that can break an enemy’s defenses, all while knocking others to the ground and opening them up for a handful of free claw swings. This brutal Special Technique has Wolverine digging his claws into the chest of an enemy, lifting them up, and rushing forward to slam them to the ground. Any foe that gets hit while Wolverine is doing this will also get knocked down.
Not only is Overwhelm a great way to get out of a pickle, such as losing against a powerful enemy, it also arguably looks the coolest. It’s a Special Technique that truly shows the strength and anger of Wolverine, making the player feel like a total badass. There’s no better feeling than lifting an enemy up and slamming them down to put them in their place.
- Overwhelm Lv 2: While charging forward, other enemies are knocked back. A kill from the following barrage allows you to tackle another enemy.
- Overwhelm Lv 3: Killing enemies recharges Overwhelm faster.

Brutal Assault
The Best Special Technique
Brutal Assault is the last Special Technique that players will unlock in Marvel’s Wolverine, and it’s also the best in the entire game. Brutal Assault allows Wolverine to unleash a unique combo on an enemy, breaking through all defenses and defeating them quickly. This means that you’ll be able to break through enemy shields, parries, and even the hard armor of elite enemies.
Even better, Brutal Assault can grant Wolverine Hot Claws, which make his claws even deadlier, and also builds the Rage meter. Since filling up the Rage bar will allow Wolverine to do instant kills on enemies, having a Special Technique that caters to that can be an absolute game changer.
- Brutal Assault Lv 2: Gains additional strikes, Brutal Assault kills build Rage.
- Brutal Assault Lv 3: Grants Hot Claws during the assault and ends with a powerful area strike. Kills with this move recharge Brutal Assault.
