We are creeping closer to the launch of GTA 6, and one thing has been conspicious by its absence: GTA Online. So far, Rockstar has carefully described GTA 6 as a “single player experience” and completely avoided the topic of what’s going to happen to GTA Online. Cue the CEO of Twitch.
Twitch CEO Dan Clancy spoke to Bloomberg (article is paywalled) and the topic of GTA 6 naturally popped up.
“We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators,” Clancy said. “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”
Whoops. I’m not sure you were supposed to say that, mate.
Of course, Clancy could just be taking an educated guess. And it would hardly be a shot in the dark: GTA Online earns bucketloads of cash for Rockstar, so obviously they’re going to do something with it following the launch of GTA 6.
On the other hand, it’s quite possibly Clancy really does know that it’s coming out next year and said something he should not have.
As for Rockstar, splitting the launches is a good way of making sure GTA 6 gets everyone’s full attention, while also giving them two massive launches spread out across two years. Make that three big launches, if you include a PC launch. The shareholders will be happy, at least.
