Vibe coding is all the rage right now, with new apps and services popping up almost every hour. You can now vibe code an app tailored to your needs in minutes. Google is embracing this chaos and making it easier to install these vibe-coded apps on your own Android devices through Google Play, with sharing coming later.

With barriers to app development lower than ever, the number of apps submitted to the Play Store and popping up online has exploded. Many of these apps start as solutions to personal pain points, but their creators may eventually want to share them with their team members or a close circle of friends and family.

Right now, most developers offer such an app by sharing the APK on the internet. But with Google imposing stricter rules on sideloading on Android, this will soon become a problem.

So, instead of requiring creators to publish such apps publicly on the Play Store, Google is opening the Play Store to personal vibe-coded apps. You can now privately publish a custom, vibe-coded Android app from Google AI Studio to the Play Store using your standard Google account.

There is no need to register for a developer account, and Google Play will not review these personal apps either.

In the next few months, Google will also add the ability to share these personal apps with your friends and family. If you decide that you are ready for the world to experience your app, you can then transition to a professional developer account. Your app will then undergo Google Play’s usual safety reviews and need to meet its quality standards.

Play Store gets a personal corner for your vibe-coded apps

All your vibe-coded apps published privately through the Play Store will appear in a new “Your personal library” section.

Before this, publishing an app on the Google Play Store required a Google Play developer account and a one-time $25 registration fee. There is also a testing process from Google, which typically lasts a few days. With Google clamping down on sideloading on Android, letting users install their vibe-coded apps through the Play Store offers a more straightforward alternative.

For now, Google says this feature is rolling out in select markets, including the US, for users aged 18 and over.

This is a great addition to the Play Store, as it makes your vibe-coded apps for small projects easy to install without flooding the public app catalog.

There is still a lot we don’t know about the new “Your personal library” feature, though, including how many users you’ll be able to share your vibe-coded apps with and what other restrictions Google will impose.
