I made a Steam Frame screensaver from r/SteamFrame

As a PlayStation VR2 player previously, I’ve been admiring the wireless ways of Valve’s Stream Frame from afar ever since it launched back in September. I don’t know about you but the $1,059 starting price still puts the VR headset a bit outside of my budget. However, Reddit user Kebakent just shared a short video of a small project they’re working on that may soften that blow.

It’s a Windows screensaver, but hear me out on my vision at least. The understated project features artwork of the Steam Frame headset and its two controllers bouncing around the screen (though so far I’ve not spotted any of these perfectly hitting the corners).

So here’s my broke girl vision: If I click on the short video in the Reddit post, make it fullscreen, and get real close to my monitor, I can pretend I already have a Steam Frame, but I’m choosing not to actively play with it. As I watch the headset twirl around the void, I can instead pretend my good poltergeist friend is having the time of their afterlife.

Okay, fine—I admit that’s not going to fool any Steam Frame-less VR head. Still, it’s never not neat to see the Valve hardware community bring its homebrew energy (I’m still very partial to this custom Steam Deck boot animation styled after the Scrubs intro). If you are a so-called Steam Frame subreddit ‘Sooner’, you can download this Windows screensaver yourself from GitHub here.

“Object size, movement speed, rotation speed, and brightness are configurable,” Kebakent writes, “It’s free and open source (MIT), with a ready-to-run .scr file included [in the repo].”

To be clear, the Redditor doesn’t own the lovely hardware art bouncing around this screensaver. They explain, “Valve confirmed I have permission to use the artwork for this non-commercial project.”

That’s fairly par for the course with Valve. For instance last week, Valve dropped the CAD files for the Steam Frame under a Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike license. That means you can create whatever hardware nightmares you like based on the Steam Frame, just so long as you don’t then try to sell them. You’re also free to tinker with the CAD files for the Steam Controller and its Puck too under the same Creative Commons License.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to keep looking for a screensaver that will convince me I don’t need to shell out over a grand for a new VR headset.
