    Summary

    • Someone used Claude Code to auto-process 4K night-sky video and flag potential meteors.
    • Retrained on approved detections, star false alarms fell from ~50% to 7% while catching ~90% of meteors.
    • The open-source sky camera runs nightly, tosses junk, and texts the details of the best meteors.

One of the main strengths of using something like Claude Code is that you can get it to do all the boring grunt work, leaving you with the fun parts. For instance, everyone wants to see all the meteors that shot across the sky the night before, but nobody wants to actually sit there and look at them. Fortunately, Claude is here to take in a 4K video feed of your night-time sky and identify all potential meteors for you instead.

This project turns Claude Code into your personal night-sky analyser

Let it do all the hard work for you

Over on the ClaudeAI subreddit, user Terrible_Award_2124 had a problem. They enjoyed looking at meteors crossing the night sky, but they weren’t such a fan of looking for them. Fortunately, they had Claude Code at hand, which takes in 4K footage of the sky and processes it, ready for the morning:

    • Built the night workflow, which now runs every night as footage arrives
    • Reviews what comes in, looking at each detection and accepting or rejecting it
    • When the model kept calling stars flying objects, it built a dataset from the detections I had approved and retrained it. On nights it never trained on, star false alarms went from about half to 7%, and it still catches 90% of meteors
    • Every morning it tosses the junk and texts me the good ones. On cloudy nights it has the decency to say nothing

You can see it in action in the video above; it managed to log 17 meteors, 6 planes, and a whole lot of birds. Fortunately, Terrible_Award_2124 didn’t have to sit there and look at each one; Claude did all the heavy lifting and gave them the best bits.

If you’d like to give it a go, check out the OpenSkyCam website and wire it up to your agent of choice.
