If you have a soft spot for post-apocalyptic worlds, eerie lore, and dark mysteries that refuse to hold your hand, chances are that you’ve been slightly (or completely) obsessed with Hell is Us for a while now!

That’s because ever since publisher Nacon and developer Rogue Factor pulled back the curtain on their atmospheric third-person action-adventure title, fans of dark, narrative-driven experiences were instantly drawn to its unique premise: a country torn apart by civil strife and plagued by mysterious, calamity-born supernatural creatures that cannot be harmed by conventional weaponry.

Now, exactly ten months after its initial debut, the team behind the game has every reason to celebrate. The developers have officially confirmed that Hell is Us has reached a major sales milestone, proving that its bold, player-centric design choices resonated deeply with a huge global audience.

    It’s a hellish time.

One Million Players Brave the Calamity

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share the exciting milestone with the community, the development team celebrated crossing the one-million-player mark across all platforms.

Rather than issuing a standard, stiff corporate statement, the studio kept things delightfully punchy, genuine, and directly addressed to the fans who supported their vision: “We’re not going to name everyone, you know who you are. A million times, thank you!”

Reaching one million players within less than a year is no small feat, especially for a brand-new intellectual property entering an incredibly competitive gaming landscape – and even more so when navigating horror and dark action territory.

What makes Hell is Us stand out in the crowded action-adventure market is its uncompromising commitment to old-school exploration principles. In an era where modern games love to clutter your screen with mini-maps, directional compasses, objective markers (yeah, Capcom, I’m looking at your yellow paint!), and constant quest logs telling you exactly where to step next, Rogue Factor’s title took a remarkably brave route by removing all of those safety nets.

Instead, the title forces players to rely entirely on their own observations, environmental cues, listening skills, and organic investigation to unravel the mysteries of its shattered world, which creates a lovely, terrifying atmosphere! Also, for me, that willingness to trust player intelligence also helps to create a distinct sense of tension and curiosity that clearly kept word-of-mouth momentum going strong ten months after launch.

On top of that, we also need to praise the game’s striking visual direction, guided by creative director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête (known for his iconic aesthetic work on Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mankind Divided), which gave its ruined landscapes and otherworldly creatures a hauntingly distinct visual flavor that looks phenomenal on current-gen hardware.

Rather than issuing a standard, stiff corporate statement, the studio kept things delightfully punchy, genuine, and directly addressed to the fans who supported their vision: “We’re not going to name everyone, you know who you are. A million times, thank you!”

In an industry where risky, atmospheric single-player projects can sometimes get lost in the noise, seeing a dedicated team hit such a benchmark by staying true to an uncompromising design vision is quite refreshing! So, whether you were there on day one or joined the fight somewhere along the way over these past ten months, passing the one-million mark proves that gamer demand for mysterious, uncompromising worlds is alive and thriving. By the way, I don’t know about you, but seeing the studio reach this well-deserved success makes me even more excited to see where Rogue Factor takes this dark universe next.
