BioWare doesn't need advice for Mass Effect 4, says veteran designer, as long as "people get out of the way"

Original Mass Effect cinematic designer and Mass Effect 2 lead cinematic designer Armando Troisi has insisted the current BioWare team doesn’t need outside advice on developing the next installment because so many of the people who built the original trilogy are still at the studio.

Asked what guidance they’d offer developers working on the new game, Troisi didn’t think they had anything to add.

“It’s hard for me to say because a lot of people that are on that project were there [during the originals],” Troisi told FRVR. “They know. Preston [Watamaniuk] is there, and Derek [Watts] is there, and Parish [Ley] is there, and they’re the OGs, you know? I don’t think there’s anything that I could tell them that they don’t know what to do.”

The next Mass Effect game is in development at BioWare.

Troisi left the studio after Mass Effect 2, but has confident in the team that remains behind.

“When I was leaving, everybody wrote on a card… he [Preston] said, ‘passion and craft is excellence’… I think they’ve got both of those so I don’t think that I can give them any more advice than they already have. They know this stuff,” Troisi said.

Troisi believes the team’s instincts are sound, but pushed into unfamiliar territory – the kind of late pivot some have pointed to around Veilguard’s development – the results can suffer.

“It’s one of those things where, if people get out of the way and let game creators just do their thing, you never know the magic that they can create,” Troisi added.

“I think, obviously, there’s a lot of different things that come to play in making a game of that scale. But trust your people and try to change the world with everything that you try to do. And I think that they can do it. I’m rooting for them.”

Troisi described BioWare’s strength as single-player, narrative-driven RPGs with deep combat and progression systems.

“The vision was always clear. There was a BioWare formula and they were going to iterate on that formula and keep turning out best-in-class cinematic RPGs and that’s basically what the mandate was,” Troisi said.

“And then they had to live through the live service era – which is still happening but is maybe not as prevalent – and we’re all beholden to companies and stakeholders and all the rest of that.”

Troisi continued: “I think BioWare, when they break it down and do that single-player, interactive narrative driven, deep combat, progression-driven game. Really, there’s nobody that can touch them. It’s kind of like the [Master] Chief [from Halo], it’s like going on a walkabout and finding themselves and coming back. I think BioWare can do it if we just leave them alone to do what they do best.”

Just a few weeks ago, former lead Mark Darrah told FRVR in a separate interview that many of the studio’s problems trace back to publisher EA’s “complicated relationship to shipping games at all”.

Matt recently played around 45 minutes of Mass Effect’s “spiritual successor” Exodus, the separate sci-fi RPG in development by Archtype, the studio founded by former Mass Effect writers. “My relationship with Mass Effect begins and ends with the first game (let’s just blame the M35 Mako and leave it at that), and so Exodus – which is making no bones about being something of a Mass Effect spiritual successor, born from some of the same creative team – isn’t a game that’s been anywhere close to my radar.” he wrote.

“While the 45 minutes or so I played wasn’t what I was expecting when I first sat down, I’ve come away both intrigued and impressed by what developer Archetype Entertainment is trying to achieve.”
