We got another look at the Fate/Extra Record remake today after the September 2026 State of Play reveal with a showcase that went over Servant characters and the new card-based combat system. The presentation spent about 17 minutes highlighting how the game will work and going over the general progression that involves “weekly” challenges against Holy Grail War competitors for a wish. This also involved a detailed overview of the new card-based attack system. The video also confirmed physical copies will be sold, with a $99.99 limited edition option offering a 75-track soundtrack, steel case, and Fate/Extra Record Material art book.
In the original Fate/Extra game, there was something of a rock-paper-scissors approach to combat that involved using attack-break-guard moves to deal with enemy encounters. When you’d enter a fight, you’d see six actions about to take place. Initially, you’d likely see about two of the enemies’ planned actions, so you could properly response to those, but the more you encounter them the more you’d see next time you encountered them.

In the Fate/Extra Record remake, there’s a card-based, turn-based combat system that acts a bit like games such as Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Mega Man Battle Network, and roguelikes with deck systems. You get cards, which can be updated with Art Phantasmagoria to become stronger. Five cards will be dealt to you on your turn, each with their own AP cost. So in one part of the showcase showing Saber combat, we see she starts a turn with two level one Slash Attack cards that each cost 1 AP, a level one Flower Storm Attack card that costs 1 AP, a level one Hard Strike Attack card that costs 2 AP, and a level one Rosa Shield Guard card that costs 1 AP. You can play cards as long as you have AP, and it is also possible to do things like use items or end your turn early. You also can see how many cards are left in your “deck,” with the examples here showing 10, 13, and 15. Attack, Skill, and Guard cards are present. Skill cards can involve buffs, debuffs, and special abilities.
As for Fate/Extra Record characters, new and old ones appear. Archer, Caster, and Saber all return as Servants and our playable partners. Type-Moon cameos are confirmed too, as Ciel shows up as the shopkeeper, and Arcueid Brunestud appears as an enemy Servant.
