YouTube Removes Subscriptions Tab In Major Interface Redesign

YouTube has announced a major interface redesign for its mobile applications on Android and iOS, removing the traditional Subscriptions tab from the bottom navigation bar after nearly a decade. Positioned in that location since 2017, the shortcut has now been relocated to the top of the home page, right after the Home option. It is accompanied by new dedicated categories for live streams, music, and movies.

This structural update also eliminates the side navigation menu, aiming to streamline access to different types of content. While the update modernizes the layout, it requires users to adapt to an entirely new organizational flow compared to the previous design.

The new YouTube interface now has fewer buttons on the lower part of the screen

Another significant addition is the introduction of custom feeds, which allow users to generate tailored recommendation pages using natural language descriptions. By tapping the plus button located at the top of the home page, users can specify particular topics, channels, or video styles they wish to watch—such as short meditation sessions or niche tutorials.

The user will be able to configure custom feeds on the main screen.

These custom feeds are saved as individual tabs and can be edited or deleted later. There is a limit of three active custom options for free users, while YouTube Premium subscribers enjoy up to eight active feeds. Furthermore, these configurations synchronize seamlessly with the web version to maintain a consistent browsing experience across multiple devices.

The rollout is currently releasing gradually in the United States across both mobile applications and desktop computers. According to the platform, these custom feeds will expand to international markets in the future, though specific regional release dates have not yet been announced. This update marks a transitional phase for the platform as it shifts toward a more flexible, personalized content discovery model designed to help viewers find what matters most to them quickly and efficiently.
